The new addition will provide snacks for student-athletes year round
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – On Monday, William V. Campbell Director of Athletics, Martin Jarmond announced the opening of a fueling station in Conte Forum designed specifically to help student-athletes refuel on a day-to-day basis.
Â
"This is an exciting time for us - a moment for us to start off this new semester with our fueling station," Jarmond said as he addressed the crowd of administrators, staff and student-athletes who attended the opening. "As you all know, nutrition and fuel is important. Part of our mission is to help our student-athletes be their best holistically – mind, body, spiritually, socially, athletically. This is part of that because if your nutrition isn't right, then you can't be right. I like to say sometimes, mind right, game right. If your mind isn't right, then your game isn't right. This is going to help you get that mind right."
Â
Head lacrosse coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein further emphasized the importance of the new fueling station.
Â
"I think this shows a huge commitment to our student-athletes and I think we can tell that there is a lot of energy behind this," Walker-Weinstein expressed. "I think what's really special about today is that we can't always see and feel all of the good things that are happening to us under Martin's leadership, but today's a little different. We can see it. This is tangible evidence of their commitment to our student-athletes and their success. We've needed this for a long time. Boston College is a first-class institution. We've always known that, that's why we're so lucky and feel so grateful to be here. I think we just raised the bar a little bit further. Huge thanks to Martin and his team. I think this is going to help us win."
Â
Senior women's ice hockey and lacrosse player Kenzie Kent spoke on the behalf of the student-athletes about the benefits of the new fueling station.
Â
"I, along with the rest of the student-athletes at Boston College, are so excited to finally have a place like this to come to throughout the day," Kent explained. "This fueling station is something we've needed for a while and it will make a huge impact on student-athletes moving forward. Our schedules are crazy so we don't always have the time to go to the dining hall. To be able to come here and get something extra in our bodies will be a big help. On behalf of all of the student-athletes, I want to thank Martin for making this all possible and for making the athletics community at BC better every day."
Â
Following the opening remarks, Kent elaborated on the ways in which she knows the fueling station will benefit student-athletes, speaking specifically to her experiences with ice hockey and lacrosse.
Â
"I know that the lacrosse team has early morning practices like lift at 7:30 and none of the dining halls are open at that point," Kent explained. "Before lift you don't want to be eating a lot anyway, so food like this is perfect. With the hockey team, we have practice until 2:45 so it's hard to get in the shower and eat before class at 3. Now this will be so helpful."
Â
Senior pitcher Brain Rapp knows that the fueling station will positively impact the team as well.
Â
"Obviously, all of our schedules are crazy, specifically for baseball," Rapp said. "This time of year we have late practices in the bubble and the dining hall is usually closed when we get out. So this is a great opportunity for us to be able to come in here and fuel up as a post-practice meal."
