Over 300 youth came to Conte Forum to participate
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – On Sunday, 13 Boston College women's teams participated in the fourth annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day event, held at Conte Forum.
This year marked the 32nd anniversary of the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a national observance celebrating the extraordinary achievements of women and girls in sports and the positive influence athletic participation brings to their lives.
The 2018 theme of National Girls & Women in Sports Day is "Play Fair, Play IX." NGWSD recognizes the ongoing effort towards equality and access for women in sports and the nation's commitment to expand sport and participation opportunities for all girls and future generations.
Jocelyn Fisher Gates, Senior Associate Athletics Director & Senior Woman Administrator, spoke about the importance of the event.
"Having so many of our female student-athletes share the love of their different sports by interacting with local girls looking to follow in their footsteps was such a great way to celebrate the power of sport and this day," she said.
This year's event took place around the Conte Forum concourse. The women's teams that participated included basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, fencing, field hockey, cheerleading, rowing, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, sailing and golf. The day started with a basketball clinic, followed by team stations. Participants were then able to get autographs from the student-athletes and they and their families were invited to attend the women's basketball game against Miami.
Over 300 youth arrived on Sunday morning ready to try out the different activities. Members of the softball team demonstrated the correct way to hit a softball and track and field athletes helped the participants practice handoffs. Those in attendance were shown how to row on ergs under the guidance of the rowing team.
Junior rower Gretchen Ray discussed why she enjoys participating in the event.
"Women have become really monumental in sports and have advanced sports so much so this event is a good way for kids to see how much women have an impact in the sports world," Ray said. "Men's sports are in the forefront of things, so I think it's really cool that we have this event so that kids can see that women's sports are also really important. It's always fun to see the kids come out here and have a really good time, especially on the rowing machines. Almost every kid when they get off says, 'I want to join the rowing team!' It's a really fun event and it means a lot."
Classmate Allyson Moore is a catcher on the softball team and she echoed the importance of the NGWSD event for her and her teammates.
"I think it's really cool to give back to the younger kids and show them that they can play softball and other sports," Moore explained. "We have the opportunity to play sports as women and that's really special. Women's programs have grown so much and events like this help inspire kids to dream."
