No. 16 Boston College welcomes New Hampshire to The Heights to close the regular-season series; Eagles came back to win in the third period in first meeting of the season
BOSTON COLLEGE vs. NEW HAMPSHIRE
Boston College and New Hampshire close out the regular-season series on Sunday afternoon at Kelley Rink. In recent history, the Eagles have dominated the conversation as BC is winners of six straight and is unbeaten in its last 10 (8-0-2) meetings against New Hampshire, including a 17-2-4 mark over the course of the last 23 fixtures. In the first meeting of the season on Nov. 17 in Durham, N.H., Boston College came from behind to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat after Michael Kim accounted for both the game-tying power play goal and game-winning marker. Joseph Woll turned in an incredible game-saving stop with 5:30 left in regulation to which also ended up being the No. 2 play on SportsCenter that night. As a whole, the series has been somewhat of a closely contested one over the course of time as Sunday night's battle marks the 151st contest between the two Hockey East staples as BC owns the narrow 74-63-14 mark over UNH. Additionally, BC assistant coach Mike Ayers was New Hampshire's goaltender from 2000-04. Ayers was voted second-team All-American in 2003.
WILDCAT WATCH
Since the Eagles and Wildcats met back on Nov. 17, New Hampshire has gone 3-6-1 in its last 10 outings and are currently in ninth place in the Hockey East standings with a 4-6-1 league mark. Senior forward Michael McNicholas leads the Wildcats with 21 points (5-16-21) while rookie forward Max Gildon's seven tallies are most on the Wildcats' roster. UNH possesses a stout defense, ranking 17th in the country (2.62), anchored by senior goaltender Danny Tirone and his fourth shutouts, which is tied for second nationally. The offense ranks 28th overall (2.95 gpg).
CAN'T KEEP UP WITH COTTON
Sophomore forward David Cotton has meshed together a career best six-game point streak, starting on Dec. 2 at BU. The Parker, Texas native tallied his assisted on a power play goal to account for at least one point in nine of his last 10 outings, including four multi-point performances in that run. The second-year winger is now second on the team in scoring with 17 points (5-12-17) through 22 outings.
HIGH-FLYIN' FIN
Sophomore forward Julius Mattila had his nine-game point streak halted against Providence on Jan. 12. The Tampere, Finland native accounted for 14 points (5-9-14) over the course of his nine-game point streak from Nov. 17 - Jan. 6. He is one of three Eagles tied for the team lead with six goals and leads the Eagles with 18 points (6-12-18). Mattila has notched at least one point in 10 of his last 12 games.
DEFENDING THE NEST
Boston College's defense continues to limit the opposing lamp being lit as BC is now holding its opponents to 2.86 goals per game. That number is tied for 25th, nationally, and sixth overall in the league. Over the course of the last 14 games, BC has given up four or more goals on only five occasions.
CASE'N THE JOINT
Captain Casey Fitzgerald is BC's leading scoring defenseman (4-9-13), which is tied for 546th, nationally, an 12th in the conference. The junior leads the Eagles in shots on goal (66), tied for the lead in blocked shots (25) and scored his first power play goal of the season on Jan. 6 vs. NMU.
THE BRICK WOLL
Sophomore backstopper Joseph Woll has stopped 398-of-442 shots faced in his first 16 outings for a .900 save percentage which is currently 60th in all of college hockey while his 2.85 goals against average ranks 40th in the game. Woll has stopped 1,310 - of - 1,441 shots faced (.909 save percentage) with a career mark of 2.71 goals against average. Woll was also one of 20 goalies named to the watch list for the 2018 Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey. Woll recently returned from the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship where he backstopped Team USA to a bronze medal.
LOOSE CHANGE
On Jan. 12 against Providence, freshman Logan Hutsko scored his second power play goal of the season and first since netting one at St. Cloud on Oct. 20. The Tampa, Fla. native curbed a 10-game scoring drought. Graham McPhee accounted for a pair of assists against Northern Michigan on Jan. 6, marking his third multi-point performance of the season. On Jan. 5 against Michigan Tech, Casey Fitzgerald and Graham McPhee both scored power play goals, the first time this season Boston College scored a pair of extra-man goals in a game. Michael Kim also scored the Eagles' first extra attacker goal of the season against Michigan Tech on Jan. 5. Sophomore goaltender Ryan Edquist secured his first-career shutout on Saturday afternoon via 23 saves against UConn in his fourth start of the season, tenth of his career. The Lakeville, Minn. native's shutout marks Boston College's first shutout of the season and first shutout for the Eagles since Joseph Woll blanked Vermont on March 10, 2017.
