Communications veteran will oversee men’s basketball communications
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Veteran sports communications professional Mike Laprey will join the Boston College Athletics Communications staff on Monday, Oct. 2. As associate director, Laprey will oversee communications activities for the Eagles' men's basketball and men's golf teams, as well as serve as the secondary contact for football.
Â
Prior to coming to The Heights, Laprey spent the last 11 seasons at Rhode Island, most recently as Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs. In addition to serving as Chief Communications Officer, he was the athletics department's liaison between all external departments while also serving as the sport administrator and media contact for the men's basketball and women tennis programs.Â
Â
Before URI, Laprey spent the 2005-06 academic year at Marquette. As the department's assistant director, he worked as the day-to-day media contact for the nationally ranked women's basketball, women's soccer and cross country programs.
Prior to his time in Wisconsin, Laprey spent seven years at Iona elevating from assistant media relations director to Associate Athletics Director. While at Iona, Laprey was in charge of all media relations efforts for the Gaels' 21 varsity sports, and served as department spokesman and chief editor and publisher for all athletic publications and media releases. He also played a large role in the department's 2003 rebrand campaign. When Laprey initially began at Iona in 1998, he served a dual role as a graduate assistant in the sports information office and an assistant coach for the Gaels' nationally ranked men's cross country team before being promoted to Assistant AD in 2000.
Â
Laprey began his professional career as a media relations assistant at the Big East Conference during the 1997-98 academic year.Â
A 1997 graduate of Fairfield University with a degree in economics and philosophy, Laprey was an undergraduate assistant in the Fairfield sports information office. He was a three-year letterman for the Stags cross country squad and was president and co-founder of the Fairfield University Track Club. He also served as head men's basketball manager for the Stags' 1995-96 NIT season and served in the same capacity for the women's team in 1996-97.
Â
He and his family - wife Sara and son Rhys - reside in Boston.
