Volleyball challenges Harvard on Thursday and Northeastern on Saturday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball returns to Boston this week to challenge local opponents Harvard and Northeastern. The Eagles will play Harvard on Thursday night at Lavietes Pavilion and Northeastern Saturday night at Cabot Center. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
Â
The Eagles are coming off a split weekend at the Cherry & White Challenge. They fell to Temple in three close sets to open the weekend, 3-0, only to rally and take down Delaware, 3-1, the following day.
Â
Sophomore Cat Balido made 33 kills over the course of the weekend while adding 11 digs and 2 service aces. Balido leads the team in points with 114 on the season thus far. Sophomore Jane DeJarld was a defensive force with 46 assists, adding to her now 196 on the season, and 15 kills over the two matches. Due to their performances, Balido and DeJarld were chosen to represent BCÂ for the Cherry & White Challenge's All-Tournament Team.
Â
In their 2017 campaign, Harvard is 2-4 with wins over Wright State and Tennessee Tech, but the Crimson are 0-3 at home. Harvard is paced by junior middle blocker Christina Cornelius with 68.5 points, 52 kills and 30 digs in six matches.
Â
Northeastern sits at an overall 5-5 record and currently holds a four-game win streak. The Huskies' first home match this season will be versus the Eagles. Sophomore Amy Underdown leads Northeastern with 108.5 points during nine matches on the season. Freshman Athena Ardila also holds over 100 points with 104.5.
Â
In the past five matchups, BC is 2-3 against Harvard and 1-4 versus Northeastern.
Â
Head coach Chris Campbell is excited for the prospects of the weekend.
Â
"It's always fun," said Campbell. "It doesn't matter in any given year if you're projected to be up or down or you're old or you're young, or you're injured or you're healthy – when you're playing those local rivals, all bets are off. Over the last six years, this has turned into really good match-ups. We have both of them on the road this year so that's going to be tough. They both get good crowds for these games, but it's a fun environment to play in. We're just going to build this week and continue the process step by step and get a little better. We're going to go in Thursday and Saturday and see if we can pull them out."
