Junior running back among the nation’s best
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior running back Jon Hilliman was named by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum today as one of the preseason candidates for the 2017 Doak Walker Award. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
Â
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists on November 15. Three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced November 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 26 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
Â
The recipient of the 2017 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 7 on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet is scheduled for February 16, 2018 in Dallas.
Â
The award, which will name its 28th recipient in 2017, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Â
Hilliman enters the 2017 season with 21 career rushing touchdowns, which places him in a tie for 11th place all-time in BC history. The New Jersey native has rushed for 1,600 career yards in 29 career games.
Â
Boston College returns 46 letterwinners and 17 starters in 2017 after the Eagles won three consecutive games to close out the 2016 season, including a 36-30 win over Big Ten foe Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl. It was the first bowl win for the Eagles since 2007 as BC went to the postseason for the third time in the previous four seasons.
Â
BC opens the 2017 season Friday, Sept. 1 at Northern Illinois (9:30 p.m.) on CBS Sports Network. The Eagles open the 2017 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. vs. Wake Forest (ACC Network Extra).
