Student-athletes honored for their excellence in the classroom by the conference
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Four Boston College lacrosse players were honored with places on the 2017 Women's Lacrosse All-ACC Academic Team, which the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
Sophomore Sam Apuzzo, sophomore Dempsey Arsenault, junior Kaileen Hart and sophomore Elizabeth Miller were recognized with spots on the 36-player team by the conference. All four Eagles are first-time honorees by the ACC.Â
Â
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Â
Apuzzo led the nation in goals in 2017, registering a program-record 80 in 24 games. Overall this season, she scored 119 points – also a program record – and finished second nationally in points. An IWLCA First-Team All-American, IWLCA First-Team All-Northeast Region and First-Team All-ACC performer, she was voted to both the ACC and NCAA All-Tournament Teams. Apuzzo was also a Tewaaraton Award Nominee.
Â
Arsenault posted 36 points this season from 15 goals and eight assists while playing 23 of 24 games. She split time between the midfield and defense. Arsenault was an IWLCA Second-Team All-Northeast Region honoree. She led the Eagles in ground balls with 48, and was second in caused turnovers (26) and draw controls (48).
Â
Hart scored a career-best 75 points in 24 games this year, a total which was the ninth highest in a single season in program history. Her 49 goals were tied for 10th most in a single season at BC. Ten of her goals were free position shots.
Â
Miller was the backbone of the Eagles' defense this season, earning IWLCA Second-Team All-America honors. She was also an IWLCA First-Team All-Northeast Region and a Second-Team All-ACC performer. Miller led the Eagles in caused turnovers (31), was second in ground balls (43) and third in draw controls (45). She started all 24 games, and added one goal and one assist.
Â
This year's four All-ACC Academic Team selections push the program's all-time total to 40 since joining the conference in 2005-06.
Â
Boston College (17-7) finished the year ranked No. 2 in the country after falling to top-ranked and undefeated Maryland, 16-13, in the National Championship game on May 28 at Gillette Stadium.
