Eagles’ associate head coach tabbed to help the U18 Women defend gold at the World Championships
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College women's hockey associate head coach Courtney Kennedy has been named an assistant coach of the 2017-18 U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team. This is the second time in as many years – and the fourth time overall – that Kennedy has been tabbed to the U18 staff.
The 2017-18 Under-18 coaching staff will be led by Minnesota associate head coach Joel Johnson, who will serve as head coach. Minnesota Duluth head coach Maura Crowell will be the U18s' associate coach, while Kennedy will serve as the assistant coach. The U.S. U18s will face Canada's U18s in its annual summer series in Lake Placid, New York, from August 17-20, and at the 2018 IIHF Women's Under-18 World Championship, which is anticipated to take place in early 2018.
In Kennedy's last stint behind the U.S. bench, the U18s won the gold medal at the 2017 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship in the Czech Republic last January, the team's third-straight gold medal and sixth overall at the event. That team was captained by incoming freshman Cayla Barnes '21, who is the only player in world history to win three gold medals at the IIHF Women's Under-18 World Championships.
In Kennedy's first two appearances behind the U.S. bench - in 2012-13 and 2013-14 - the U18s won silver at both the 2013 and 2014 IIHF Women's U18 World Championships. Those two teams featured a combined six future BC Eagles.Â
Â
Kennedy, a product of Woburn, Mass., is a two-time U.S. Olympian who won silver in 2002 in Salt Lake City and bronze in 2006 in Turin.
