BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Jake Alu extended his career-long hit streak to seven games with a 2-for-3 day, leading the Eagles at the plate. He scored a run and drove one in with a sac fly in his first at bat.
- Junior Donovan Casey tallied two hits and drove in two. He has a hit in the last six games tying a season long. He leads the team with 12 multi-hit games and is 11-for-29 in the lead-off spot.
- Junior Jake Palomaki returned to the diamond, coming in as a defensive replacement at second base in the eighth inning. After starting 116 straight career games for the Eagles, Palomaki missed the last 10 due to a hamstring injury. He drew a walk in his only at bat for the 99th of his career, which is tied for third in BC record books.
- Freshman RHP Jack Cunningham threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout while junior LHP Mitch Bigras struck out the side in the ninth in his third appearance on the mound.
- Freshman Jacob Yish tallied his first career hit in the form of a pinch-hit single in the ninth.
KEY PLAYS
- The Eagles took a one-run lead in the fourth but the Heels managed to tie the game with a solo home run in the fifth.
- UNC scored seven runs off three hits – two of them homers – and three walks to take a commanding, 14-7 lead.
- Carolina reliever Rodney Hutchison Jr. did not allow the Eagles to score in four innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tar Heels were the first to get on the board. They loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, error and a base hit. With two outs, Michael Busch singled back up the middle to score two. With runners on second and third, sophomore right-handed starter Jacob Stevens got a slow roller to second to end the inning.
- The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Gian Martellini led off with a triple off the wall in right and Bigras put runners on the corners by drawing a walk. Alu plated Martellini with a sac fly to right. Freshman Brian Dempsey grounded one to first, but UNC shortstop Logan Warmoth couldn't make the catch at second, allowing Bigras to end on third. Dempsey moved into scoring position on a passed ball and Bigras scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
- UNC retook the lead in the fourth, scoring four off Stevens. The righty allowed a lead-off walk and with one down, Cody Roberts doubled to plate a run. Brian Miller hit a two-out double to score Roberts and Warmoth homered to left to make it a 6-2 game. Stevens got a strikeout swinging to get out of the inning.
- BC scored five in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead. Martellini was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Freshman Aaron Soucy came in to run and moved to second after Bigras singled. Soucy scored on Alu's fielder's choice, which skipped away from the shortstop. Dempsey laid down a bunt to load the bases and junior Anthony Maselli drew a walk to bring in another BC run. Senior Chris Balogh came through with a pinch-hit groundout, scoring Alu from third. Casey singled to right to clear the bases and put the Eagles up, 7-6. A sac bunt moved Casey to second but a strikeout ended the BC threat.
- Kyle Datres homered to lead off the fifth to tie the game at seven.
- The Heels scorrf seven runs in the sixth and chased Stevens from the game. Roberts started the inning with a base hit to right and with one down, Miller homered over the right center field fence. Two walks by Stevens put two Heels on and sophomore LHP Zach Stromberg came in the game. The lefty issued a walk to the first batter he faced to load the bases and a wild pitch allowed a run in. After walking another batter, sophomore RHP Jack Nelson entered the game but gave up a grand slam to Zack Gahagan to give the Heels a 14-7 lead. Nelson got a fly ball and line out to end the inning.
- UNC added three in the seventh with freshman RHP Matt Gill on the mound. With runners on second and third after two walks and a wild pitch, Warmoth hit a blooper to right to bring in a run. A base hit by Aston McGee plated another before Gill got two outs with a fly ball and strikeout. He walked two more to make it 17-7. Cunningham came in and got a strikeout swinging to end the inning.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles tagged UNC starter JB Bukauskas for the most runs he has allowed this season, as they scored seven over a four innings. It was also the shortest outing of the year for Bukauskas, who came into the game leading the ACC in ERA and strikeouts.
- The grand slam was the first given up by a BC pitcher since the Super Regional finale at Miami on June 12, 2016 when Hurricane Edgar Michaelangeli hit one off Jesse Adams in Coral Gables.
- The 17 runs scored and the 12 walked issued were the most allowed by the BC pitching staff in 2017. The four home runs tied a season high. BC allowed four at Virginia Tech on March 31.
- Balogh is 4-for-10 as a pinch hitter in 2017. He has four RBIs on the year in that role.
