#BCEagles Newsstand: Sixth Annual ALS Awareness Game at Fenway Park
April 26, 2017 | Baseball
It was a special day on and off the diamond for the Eagles
On Saturday, the Boston College baseball team played the annual ALS Awareness Game in a new location – Fenway Park. The game honors former captain and ALS advocate and patient Pete Frates, but this year featured a new face - former NC State baseball player Chris Combs.
The game was also nationally televised on ESPNU with Boston College alumni Jon Sciambi (play-by-play) and Molly McGrath (sidelines) on the call, along with former Florida State football and baseball standout Danny Kanell (color).
Before the action, head coach Mike Gambino and Frates' brother, Andrew, appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher and Rich to preview the game and talk about Frates' efforts to raise awareness and funds for the disease.
Baseball America's Michael Lananna previewed the day, explaining Frates and the fight against ALS is never far from the minds of BC.
It was a special day on and off the field, as the Eagles honored Frates and his family, along with Combs, in a pregame ceremony. Combs threw out the first pitch and greeted Frates at the plate as all the Eagles welcomed the Frates to Fenway as the game started.
BC went on to beat the Wolfpack, 8-3, and later sweep the series. But it was more than just a game for the Eagles.
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy was on hand for the festivities and told Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald, "(Frates) is the most inspirational Boston athlete I've ever seen."
Freshman Jacob Yish, a Byfield, Mass., native, who also attended Frates' high school alma mater St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass., explained that having the Frates at Fenway made the experience even better.
As the Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first, sophomore Jake Alu told The Heights, "We kinda all know what Pete means to us, so we just kept that with us as we came out in the first inning and scored four runs."
"College baseball has really wrapped its arms around this cause," Frates' mother, Nancy told Fox 25 Sports. "These young guys are really elevating and keeping the momentum going…this disease is going to be a thing of the past."
As WCVB noted, the real opponent is ALS and as Andrew noted, "the conversation has changed from if ALS will be cured to when ALS will be cured."
