Maroon and Gold Play to Tie in Spring Game

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Maroon and Gold played to a 17-17 tie on Saturday afternoon in Boston College's annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game at a rainy Alumni Stadium.

In a back-and-forth game, the two sides traded scoring drives throughout the game, which saw abbreviated 10:00 quarters in the second half, as well as a running clock in the second half.

In a halftime ceremony, rising senior defensive back Isaac Yiadom was honored with the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship. The award has been given annually since 1993 to a Boston College defensive back who best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit, and personal concern for family friends and teammates. McGillis, a starting defensive back for Boston College, passed away from leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first quarter, Maroon got on the board first with a 30-yard drive. Taj-Amir Torres regained possession for Maroon, intercepting an Anthony Brown pass and running back to the Gold 30. Davon Jones hit for a 20-yard run, following by a 4-yard gain. He kept the ball on the next play and converted the 6-yard rush for the game's first touchdown.
On the next drive, Christian McStravick made a 19-yard catch from Darius Wade to move Gold down the field. Richard Wilson took over on the rush and after back-to-back short gains, he converted from one yard out, and after a Colton Lichtenburg PAT, the teams were tied at 7-7.
Wade connected with Jeff Smith for the longest play from scrimmage of the afternoon - a 48-yard throw down the right side - to set up Maroon's second TD. Jon Hilliman punched in from the 5-yard line to stake Maroon to a 14-7 lead.
Gold countered before the end of the first half when Richard Wilson broke free for a 21-yard TD run. The score was set up by a 16-yard catch by Elijah Johnson from Wade and Lichtenburg's point after sent the teams into halftime knotted at 14-14
Mike Knoll put Maroon up 17-14 in the third quarter with a 38-yard field goal, but with 4:00 left in the fourth quarter Lichtenburg converted a 18-yard field-goal attempt to push the score to the final 17-17.
