Pair of Eagles recognized by area media for outstanding 2016-17 seasons
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players have been acknowledged for outstanding 2016-17 seasons by the New England Hockey Writers (NEHW). The NEHW's annual All-Star Team and superlative awards were released earlier today, and the honorees will be recognized at the association's banquet on Tuesday, April 11 at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass.
Junior defenseman Megan Keller was recognized as the Most Valuable Player in New England by the NEHW, while both she and senior forward Andie Anastos earned places on the New England All-Star Team.
Keller, who was Hockey East's only All-American and Patty Kazmaier Award Top 10 Finalist, also made history as the league's first defenseman to be voted conference Player of the Year. Keller has been named to the All-New England Team in each of her three seasons at The Heights, while also earning Hockey East First-Team All-Star honors each season. This year, she led all defensemen nationally in points (39) and assists (29) and also paced Hockey East in conference plus/minus (+36). The Eagles' defense was tied for third-best nationally, allowing 1.54 goals per game. BC also finished second nationally in penalty-kill percentage (91.6 percent) and led the nation with 10 shorthanded goals.
As captain, Anastos led the Eagles in scoring with a career-high 42 points. Her 16 goals were tied for the team lead, while her 26 assists were second on the squad behind Keller's 29. Anastos finished in the top 15 in the nation in assists (T-15th), power-play goals (5, T-15th), power-play assists (11, T-sixth), power-play points (16, T-fifth), shorthanded goals (3, T-third), game-winning goals (4, T-14th) and faceoffs won (450, second). Anastos was a prominent figure on both the Eagles' power-play unit that led the nation both with a 25.5 percent success rate and 40 goals on the man-advantage, as well as its second-ranked penalty-kill unit.
Boston College finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 3 in the country after advancing to its seventh Frozen Four in program history. BC (28-6-5) won its fourth-straight Hockey East regular-season title with a 17-4-3 record, and captured its second-straight – and third overall – Hockey East Tournament crown.
