BOSTON COLLEGE IN THE BEANPOT
Boston College returns to Causeway Street for the 65th annual Beanpot Tournament on Feb. 6, 2017. Fresh off their 20th Beanpot title after a wild 1-0 overtime thriller against arch rival Boston University in 2016, the series labeled the "Battle of Comm Ave." is this year's matinee at 8 p.m. The Eagles look to avenge two losses to the Terriers earlier this season (Jan. 13 • 2-1 and Jan. 16 • 3-0) to try and claim their seventh Beanpot trophy in the last eight years. Northeastern snapped BC's attempt at tying the Beanpot record of six-straight titles in 2015 when theh Huskies topped the Eagles in the first round. The Eagles five-straight Beanpot from 2010 to 2014 are a school record. Head coach Jerry York has has won nine Beanpot titles (2001, 2004, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016), surpassing legendary BC skipper John "Snooks" Kelley. York is now second, all-time, in the pantheon of Beanpot coaches behind BU's Jack Parker (21 Beanpot trophies). In all, Boston College has won the Beanpot 20 times with 15 runners-up showings, 23 third-place finishes and only six last-place finishes. The Eagles have never finished last under York. In all, York is 31-13 in the Beanpot. Boston College has won been awarded 17 MVP trophies and 12 Eberly awards. The most recent recipients of those trophies was Kevin Hayes (MVP) and Thatcher Demko (Eberly) in 2014. Since 1993, only BC and BU have skated away as the toast of Boston. In that 21 year run, BC has won 10 trophies and BU has claimed 12 titles. Â
THE BATTLE OF COMM AVE. AT THE BEANPOT
Archrivals Boston College and Boston University will bring the Battle of Comm Ave. to TD Garden in a highly-anticipated matchup following last year's first-ever 1-0 final score in the history of the Beanpot Tournament. In last year's championship final, sophomore Alex Tuch tallied his 11th goal of the season 1:57 into overtime to lift the Eagles to their 20th Beanpot Championship title in the tournament's 64-year history. Monday's second semifinal marks the 22nd time that Boston College and Boston University have matched up in the first round. The Terriers have dominated BC in the semis, owning a 15-6 overall mark in those games. But, Boston College has had Boston University's number in the Beanpot as of late, having won the last SIX meetings in February at TD Garden. BC has won the last three semifinal and championship meetings. The Terriers have not beaten BC in the Beanpot since Brian McGuirk scored 5:06 into overtime in the 2007 final on Feb. 12, 2007. In all, BU leads BC on the overall Beanpot ledger, 27-16, having won 12-consecutive games over BC from 1982 to 2000. Boston College and Boston University will have skated against one another 43 times out of 65 tournaments, marking 66 percent of the tournament. Out of that significant number, BC and BU have never played in the consolation game on the second Monday. Jerry York is 2-0 against BU's David Quinn in Beanpot meetings.
TWENTY SOMETHINGS
With another offensive eruption in Durham, N.H. on Feb. 3 in a 6-4 win at New Hampshire, Boston College can now tout having SIX 20-point scorers. Currently, no other team in college hockey can boast that claim. Ironically enough, BC does not have a skater that is averaging over a point per game. Following the Eagles' third six-goal performance in four games, the BC offense is now ranked ninth, overall, in the nation and third in Hockey East. Boston College is averaging 3.41 goals per game.Â
NOT TO POINT FINGERS, BUT...
Boston College possesses the second-most points in all of college hockey (99-180-279), nine behind Union. The Eagles have also racked up the second-most assists (180) and are currently fourth in goals scored (99). Boston College is also leading college hockey in even-strength points scored (204) and fourth in the nation in most road points scored with 153. BC is also back up to in first place in the NCAA in plus/minus differential (+40).Â
LEADING THE WAY
Boston College's top five point getters through 29 games are Matthew Gaudreau (6-20-26), Colin White (13-10-23), Austin Cangelosi (11-11-22), Christopher Brown (7-15-22) and Ryan Fitzgerald (7-14-21). White's 0.54 goals per game ranks tied for 33rd in all of college hockey while Gaudreau's 0.69 assists per game are tied for 42nd in the NCAA.
HERE'S MY PLUS-ONE
The Eagles are outscoring their opponent by just over one goal per game and are tied for the 10th-highest mark in the NCAA. BC's + 1.03 goal differential is tied for third in the league as the Eagles have netted 99 goals and given up only 69. The +40 plus / minus mark, as a club, is the best mark in all of college hockey.
STARTING OFF STRONG
The Boston College defense has been rock solid starting off games thus far. The Eagles' defensive unit has not allowed more than two goals in the first period of play the entire season until Notre Dame snuck a couple past on Jan. 28. At this point, BC leads all teams in the league in first-period goals given up, surrendering only 13 through 29 games.
DEFENDING THE HEIGHTS
The freshmen goaltending tandem of Joseph Woll and Ryan Edquist have performed at a high level this season as both are keeping the Eagles' defensive corps in the top half of the rankings. Against UConn on Jan. 24, Woll turned in a career performance, turning away 42 shots. In all, Woll has amassed a 14-8-1 (.630 - 20th in the NCAA) record, with a 2.47 goals against average (26th in the NCAA) and a .921 save percentage (17th overall). Edquist has been the primary back up with nice numbers, picking up his fourth-career win (4-1-1 in all) after defeating UMass on Jan. 20. In all, Edquist owns a 1.75 goals against average with a .929 save percentage.
DON'T GET ALL DEFENSIVE
Heading into the Beanpot Tournament, Boston College has only surrendered four goals or more on six occasions. The Eagles tout the fourth-stingiest defense in Hockey East and the 13th toughest to score against in the NCAA.
NONPLUSSED
Defenseman Scott Savage is currently tied for fifth in the country with an overall plus / minus of +19 through 29 games. His classmate, forward Austin Cangelosi continues to creep up that column as the Estero, Fla. native is third overall in all of college hockey. Cangelosi is at +23 right now, just six behind Union's Spencer Foo (+29).
