BOSTON COLLEGE vs. UMASS LOWELL
Just about every Hockey East season comes down to the wire, but this one is particularly interesting as the top four teams in the league square off against one another. Boston College, the first-place squad up two points on second-place Boston University, is four points ahead of UMass Lowell. BC will host the River Hawks on Thursday night while Lowell will close the regular season against the Eagles on Friday night at Tsongas Center. Both teams have protected home ice against one another recently as the River Hawks have not won at Kelley Rink in their last three trips (0-2-1) while the Eagles are also 0-2-1 in their last three ventures to Tsongas Center. In the last 10 meetings, the Eagles have had the slight upper hand with a 5-3-2 mark. Since the dawn of Hockey East, BC has gone 26-13-4 at Kelley Rink against UMass Lowell. Since taking over at BC, Coach York has amassed a 45-20-4 mark against the River Hawks. In all, Boston College is 64-37-9 and since Lowell head coach Norm Bazin's arrival, the Eagles are 7-4-3 in 14 meetings.
RIVER HAWK REPORT
The River Hawks have been streaky as of late as UMass Lowell skates into the Thursday - Friday series on one of its better stretches. Lowell has won its last five-consecutive outings, and done so in dominant fashion, outscoring its opponent collectively, 26-12. Prior to that hot streak, the River Hawks lost four straight, getting swept by Providence and dropped a pair the next weekend against Northeastern and Boston University. In all, Lowell is only one of seven teams that has reached the 20-win plateau thus far, coming in with a 20-9-3 mark and a 12-7-1 record. UMass Lowell possesses the nation's second-most lethal power play, operating at a rate of 28.6 percent (42-of-147). With that, the offense stands as the eighth best in college hockey and second best in the league (3.62 gpg). Senior Joe Gambardella ranks 15th in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 1.31 points per game (15-27-42) while classmate CJ Smith is one of 14 skaters in the game to have scored eight power play goals or more this season.
WHAT THE EAGLES NEED THURSDAY FOR THE CROWN
The final week of the regular season is upon us and the top four teams [ (1) BC / (4) UMLÂ & (2) BU / (3) ND ] are squaring off. Boston College can finish no worse than third and if the Eagles win on Thursday and the Terriers lose, BC will claim its 15th regular season Hockey East title. If the Eagles win and BU and Notre Dame tie, the Eagles will also claim the title.
PARSING THE PAIRWISE
With only two games left in the regular season and a Hockey East playoff push to follow, the Eagles are fighting to get back into the NCAA bubble. After back-to-back draws against Vermont, the Eagles are currently 18th in RPI ranking (.5410). Heading into the UML series, Boston University (sixth - .5634), UMass Lowell (eighth - .5560), Providence (T-ninth - .5542) and Notre Dame (T-15th - .5418) are the remaining teams above the Eagles in the Pairwise mix.
STALEMATE STORIES
Boston College and Vermont skated to two-consecutive draws on Feb. 17-18. The last time Boston College played in back-to-back games that went to overtime was on Feb. 20-23, 2015. The last time the Eagles tied two-straight games was when the Eagles tied BU on Jan. 19, 2008 and Maine on Jan. 25, 2008.
CHART TOPPERS
Seniors Ryan Fitzgerald and Austin Cangelosi are etching their names in Boston College history in their final go around on The Heights. Fitzgerald scored his 62nd-career goal on Feb. 17. The Estero, Fla. native has now scored 52 career goals as an Eagle and is two goals away (54) from cracking teh top 50 for his career. The centerman is currently in 64th, all-time, in points scored at Boston College (52 - 60Â - 112).
TRACKING TWENTY
If Boston College wins two more games this season, it will mark the eighth-consecutive year BC has won 20 or more games. The Eagles have won 20 or more contests from the 2009-10 season each year and look to match that benchmark again. The eight-consecutive 20-win seasons tops Jerry York's previous (2002-08) of six seasons.
SHARING THE WEALTH
Heading into the UMass Lowell series, Boston College currently sports EIGHT 20-point scorers (and one 30-point scorer). Only a couple other programs in all of college hockey can support that claim, as well. After going winless in the last five outings for the first time since Dec. 5 - Jan. 17, 2008-09, the BC offense has slid to a tie for 15th, overall, in the nation and fifth in Hockey East. Boston College is averaging 3.24 goals per game.Â
HELP ME HELP YOU
Ryan Fitzgerald turned in the Eagles' EIGHTH playmaker (three assists in a game) against Merrimack on Feb. 10. Boston College is one of three teams to have had one individual obtain three assists in a game that many times. Northeastern and American International are the others.Â
POINT PRODUCTION
Boston College possesses the fifth-most points in all of college hockey (110-200-310), 25 points behind the national leader, Union. BC also possess the fourth-most assists (200) and is one of 18 teams to have cracked the 100-goal plateau (110). Boston College's five-on-five game is currently the best in the NCAA, having scored the most points of any other club (229) in even strength. Boston College is also sixth in the nation in most road points scored with 153. BC is tied for third in the NCAA in plus/minus differential (+32).Â
LEADING THE WAY
Matthew Gaudreau became the first Eagle to crack the 30-point plateau (7-23-30) this season and sit atop the points lead alongside Austin Cangelosi (16-13-29), Colin White (14-13-27), Ryan Fitzgerald (8-18-26) and David Cotton (10-12-22). Cangelosi's near half goal a game (0.48 gpg) rate has his tied for 40th, nationally, while Gaudreau's 0.68 points per game ranks him 46th amongst all college skaters.
STARTING OFF STRONG
Despite a lapse against Merrimack on Feb. 10, BC's defense has been rock solid starting off games thus far. The Eagles' defensive unit has not allowed more than two goals in the first period of play the entire season until Feb. 10. At this point, BC leads all teams in the league in first-period goals given up, surrendering only 18 through 34 games.
KILLING IN THE NAME OF
BC's penalty kill kept Northeastern's power play unit off the board on Feb. 13 in the consolation game of the Beanpot, curbing a 19-game PP goal streak for the Huskies.
PIPE CLEANERS
The freshmen goaltending tandem of Joseph Woll and Ryan Edquist have performed at a high level this season. In all, Woll has amassed a 14-10-3 (.574 - T-27th in the NCAA) record, with a 2.59 goals against average (27th in the NCAA) and a .915 save percentage (21st overall). Edquist picked up his fourth-career win (4-2-1 in all) after defeating UMass on Jan. 20. In all, Edquist owns a 1.82 goals against average with a .923 save percentage.
DID YOU GET A PLUS ONE?
Michael Kim is currently tied for 26th in the country and ninth amongst all defensemen, with an overall plus / minus of +16 through 34 games. Offensively, forward Austin Cangelosi continues to creep up that column as the speedy center is tied for eighth overall in all of college hockey. Cangelosi is at +20 right now, just eight behind Union's Spencer Foo (+28).
DON'T GET ALL DEFENSIVE
Heading into the UMass Lowell series, Boston College has only surrendered four goals or more on eight occasions. The Eagles tout the fifth-stingiest defense in Hockey East and the 16th toughest to score against in the NCAA, surrendering only 2.56 goals per game.
