BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Jake Palomaki drew three walks to move up to tie for eighth in BC records books with 91 career base on balls. He was 1-for-2 with an RBI single, run and stolen base on the day.
- Junior Scott Braren extended his hit streak, dating back to last year, to a career-long five games, going 2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI.
- Freshman RHP Jack Cunningham threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in his Maroon and Gold debut. He allowed one hit, hit a batter and recorded his first career K.
KEY PLAYS
- The Eagles tied the game at three in the fourth but the Wildcats scored three off freshman RHP Matt Gill in the fifth to retake the lead. BC fought back to get two the following inning and had a runner on third with two outs in the eighth, but could not finish the rally to come back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats were the first to strike, notching two in the first on errors by the Eagles. After issuing two one-out walks, junior starter RHP Brian Rapp's throw to second on a come-backer to the mound was wide, allowing the first run in. BCU added another on a fielding error by Palomaki as a line drive popped out of his glove.
- Bethune-Cookman made it 3-0 in the second as Rapp gave up a lead-off single to Chase DeBonis but got the next two batters swinging. Three wild pitches scored DeBonis from first.
- The Eagles tied the game in the fourth and chased starter LP Dontè Lindsay from the game. With one down, junior Donovan Casey singled through the left side and Braren plated him with a double down the right-field line. Freshman Brian Dempsey drew a two-one walk before junior Mitch Bigras laced one through the right side to score Braren. Freshman Aaron Soucy walked to load the bases and Palomaki came through with a game-tying single up the middle off new pitcher RHP TJ Densmore.
- The Wildcats retook the lead in the fifth with Gill on the mound for the first time in his BC career. He notched a 123 fourth with his first career K, but ran into trouble in the fifth. With two on and two outs after two walks, Austin Garcia hit a two-RBI double to right and advanced to third on the throw home. He scored on a double by Nate Sterijevski. Gill got out of the inning by forcing a fly ball.
- BC cut the lead to one the following inning. Bigras struck out swinging but reached first as the third strike got away from the BCU catcher. Palomaki drew his second walk of the game to put two on. Senior Michael Strem doubled to left to score Bigras and when left fielder Parks bobbled the ball, Palomaki made it a 6-5 game.
- Palomaki tallied his third walk of the game with two outs in the eighth. RHP Ivan Coutinho's pickoff attempted sailed down past the BCU first baseman, allowing Palomaki to reach third, but the pitcher got a strikeout to get the Wildcats out of the inning.
- Freshmen Brian Dempsey and Aaron Soucy made their first career starts for the Eagles with Dempsey at third and Soucy behind the plate. Dempsey drew a walk and scored a run and Soucy tallied a walk as well.
- The Eagles ended their streak of four games without an error, dating back to last season, recording three in the contest. The last time BC registered three miscues in a games was a 6-3 loss at Georgia Tech on May 19, 2016.
