Junior defensive back tied for the national lead with seven interceptions
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced the 128th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team Thursday night and Boston College junior defensive back Lukas Denis earned second-team honors.
Denis is the 13th Boston College player in school history to earn the prestigious honor. He is the first Walter Camp All-American since defensive end Harold Landry earned second-team honors last season. Denis is the first BC defensive back to be named a Walter Camp All-American since Jamie Silva in 2007.
The Walter Camp All-America team is the nation's oldest All-America team. Players were selected by the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.
Â
In his first year as a starter at free safety, Denis put together a strong season to earn All-ACC honors in addition to the All-ECAC accolades for the first time. The Everett, Mass., native is tied for the national lead with seven interceptions, which is for fourth in Boston College single-season history. Denis is tied for 11th nationally with 16 passes defended in 2017 and ranks third on the team with 80 tackles.
Â
In addition to being named to the Walter Camp All-America team, Denis also was named to The All-American's Inaugural All-America second-team.
Â
In all, 33 different schools from nine conferences (including independents) were represented on the All-America First and Second Teams (a total of 52 players selected). Overall, the Atlantic Coast Conference had the most honorees (11), followed by the Big Ten (10) and Big 12 (9).
The 2017 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization's 51st annual national awards banquet, presented by David McDermott Lexus of New Haven, on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Yale
University Commons in New Haven, Conn. Â
Â
The Foundation will also recognize three individuals – Lee Corso (Distinguished American), former Ohio State and NFL running back Eddie George (Alumni Award) and former Georgia Tech and NFL standout wide receiver Calvin Johnson (Man of the Year) – with major awards.
Â
Boston College will play in its fourth bowl game in five years under head coach Steve Addazio in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Iowa. Kickoff is set for 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27.
