Eagles become first conference team to reach 200 wins as Daryl Watts collects three points in the win
BOSTON – Daryl Watts scored two goals and Makenna Newkirk tallied the game-winner in the third period as the second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team earned a 4-2 win over Boston University at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Boston College (13-1-3, 7-0-3 HEA) won its 200th game in Hockey East, becoming the first league team to reach the 200-win milestone in conference history. The league began its women's division in 2002-03.
After Boston University (6-8-3, 3-6-3 HEA) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission through the first of Rebecca Leslie's two goals on the day, Boston College came back to tie the game via Watts' first goal 6:35 in to the second. She added a power-play goal at 15:19 to give BC its first lead, but Leslie scored again at 17:21 as the teams went into the second break tied at 2-2.
Newkirk's power-play goal at 4:35 gave the Eagles the lead for good and then Serena Sommerfield's goal less than 90 seconds later padded the BC advantage at 4-2. The Terriers pulled goaltender Erin O'Neil for spans totaling almost four-and-a-half minutes in the final seven minutes of the game – including forcing a 6-on-3 power-play chance – but BU was unable to pull a goal back.
With the win, BC won the three-game regular-season series between the teams, 2-0-1.
The Eagles return to action next weekend when the team closes out the first-semester schedule with a home-and-home series with Merrimack. BC will host the Warriors on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at Kelley Rink. On Saturday, the teams will play at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Mass., on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m.
