Dwyer Shines in Shootout Victory

The Eagles bounce back with fifth victory over a ranked opponent
NEWTON, Mass. – The eighth-ranked Boston College field hockey earned a 2-1, shootout victory over No. 13 Harvard on Sunday afternoon at Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. The two teams battled for nearly 80 minutes in a 1-1 game, sending it to shootout where sophomore goalie Sarah Dwyer saved four of the five shots in the shootout to give the Eagles (9-5) the win.

BC struck first as junior Carly Kauffman scored on a corner in the 18th minute. The Crimson (9-3) answered on a corner of its own less than five minutes later. The Eagles played down a player for the final minute of regulation and the first four minutes of overtime as junior Alyssa Olenick was issued a yellow card.

Dwyer was excellent, making eight saves in the game, including three on Harvard corners in the second half, one on a penalty stroke and two in the overtime periods. Freshmen Caroline McGovern and Jaime Natale scored during the shootout to help lift the Eagles to victory.

BC has bounced back from every loss, winning the following game for a perfect 5-0 on the season. The Eagles are 4-2 in all extra-times this season, including going 1-1 in shootouts. Â

GOAL: BC 1, HAR 0; 17:06: The Eagles scored first after garnering two corner opportunities in a row. Kauffman drove one on net after senior Alesandra Miller inserted and classmate Chelcie Mendonca made the stick stop.
GOAL: BC 1, HAR 1; 21:36: The Crimson evened the score on a corner of its own. Hannah Pearce knocked one past Dwyer as Ellie Cookson inserted and Casey Allen made the stick stop.
SAVE: BC 1, HAR 1; 90:41: Harvard was awarded a penalty stroke in double overtime but Dwyer made the save on Olivia Allin's shot, keeping the score tied.

The game marked the 11th Annual MS Game, honoring former BC forward Kathleen Murphy '09, who was diagnosed multiple sclerosis during her junior year. She, and former BC head coach Ainslee Lamb (2005-14) were honored before the start of the game.

- The Eagles improved to 22-8 in the all-time series against Harvard. It was the 30th meeting between the two teams. The Eagles have won the last 13 meetings and are 12-2 at home.
- Dwyer's eight saves is the second-highest total for the sophomore. She racked up nine in the overtime loss to North Carolina on Sept. 16.
- BC moved to 5-5 against ranked opponents in 2017.
- BC is 4-2 in all game that surpass regulation. The Eagles are 1-1 in shootouts this season.
- The Eagles are 4-0 when tied at halftime and 8-0 when scoring first. BC is also 9-0 against non-conference opponents.
