Georgia Tech visits on Friday and Clemson on Sunday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After a month-long road trip, the Boston College volleyball team returns to Power Gym to host Georgia Tech and Clemson on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., respectively.
Â
The Eagles finished their road trip at Wake Forest, then at Duke, losing both matches in three sets. Senior Sol Calvete and sophomore Cat Balido led BC in kills with 11 apiece, while sophomore Jane DeJarld recorded 23 assists and sophomore Jill Strockis registered 28 digs on the weekend. Freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu became BC's block leader over the weekend, totaling 40 on the season.
Â
Head coach Chris Campbell is looking forward to finally being back at The Heights.
Â
"There's a sense of relief," he said. "A month on the road is a long time and it's nice to get back into the confines of your own gym. You don't have the break in routine of travel. For us, this is an opportunity. These are our first ACC home matches against teams that we should be very competitive with and, in that sense, we have to step up a little bit this weekend."
Â
Friday will mark the 25th meeting between BC and Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets hold the advantage, 22-2. Georgia Tech's 2017 overall record is 7-8, and their ACC record is 2-2, slating the two wins against Clemson and North Carolina. Senior Gabriela Stavnetchei paces the Yellow Jackets in kills (210), senior Gabby Benda leads in assists (333) and freshman Sam Knapp tops in digs (185).
Â
The Eagles with close the weekend against Clemson on Sunday. The Tigers lead in the all-time match advantage, 18-4. Clemson will challenge Syracuse Friday before coming to Power Gym, but they are currently 5-11 overall, but have yet to win an ACC competition. Leaders for Clemson include sophomore Kaylin Korte in kills (176), junior Caroline Pearson with assists (427) and freshman Madi Howell with digs (203).
Â
"Both of [the teams] lost significant players last year," said Campbell on the pairings. "To some degree, they're a lot like us. There putting together pieces on the floor that haven't been together for a number of years. Certainly Georgia Tech last year lost a couple of all-conference players and they're figuring that out and Clemson has had a coaching change, so there's a new system in place. But both of them have had some good results so far. They're also kind of like us – trying to piece together essentially new teams. I think both of these matches are going to be very competitive."
