Mitchell's Goal Propels Eagles Into ACC Tournament

Freshman Gianna Mitchell scored in 2OT to give Eagles a 3-2 win.
The Boston College women's soccer team needed a victory and freshman defender Gianna Mitchell delivered. The rookie from Springfield scored in the 110th minute on a header to give the Eagles a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
Boston College (10-8-1) picked up three points and finished eighth in the conference at 4-5-1 with 13 points. Louisville lost to NC State, 2-1, to finish with 11 points and a 3-5-2 record. Clemson tied FSU, 2-2, in double-overtime to finished with a 3-4-3 record for 12 points.
The Eagles earned a trip to the ACC Tournament with the win and will play at top-seed Duke on Sunday in Durham.
This marks the first time since the 2013 season that Boston College advanced to the ACC Tournament. BC placed tied in sixth in the conference that season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
BC GOAL – 8 min.: Sophomore Jenna Bike scored off a rebound from a Sam Coffey shot. Bike one-timed a left-footed shot into the near post for a 1-0 lead.
PITT GOAL – 31 min: Sarah Krause picked up a poor back pass that went between two defenders and placed the ball into the low left side to tie the game at 1-1.
BC GOAL – 41 min.: Senior Lauren Berman picked up a loose ball inside the box and slid the ball by the diving Pittsburgh goalkeeper for a 2-1 BC lead.
PITT GOAL- 84 min.: With just six minutes to play, Vildan Kardesier took a long shot from 24 yards out that fell right under the crossbar out of the reach of BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant to tie the game at 2-2.
BC GOAL – 104 min.: Boston College won its sixth corner kick of the game. Sam Coffey, who already assisted on the first goal of the game, sent a long ball to the far post. Freshman Gianna Mitchell timed her jumper and beat the Pitt goalkeeper to the ball, and placed the header into the near post for a 3-2 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Lauren Berman now has a team-high seven goals, three assists for 17 points, a new single season high for the senior midfielder.
- Freshman Sam Coffey added two assists to her tally and now has nine. She leads the team in scoring with five goals, nine assists for 19 points.
- Sophomore Jenna Bike scored her sixth goal of the season. She has scored two goals in the last two games.
- Freshman Gianna Mitchell's game-winning goal was her third goal of the season. It was also her second game-winning goal.
- BC had 24 shots, 13 on goal. The Eagles held Pittsburgh to 10 shots, six on goal.
- Senior defender Allyson Swaby had another strong game on defense. One play stands out as a long bouncing ball landed into the box and Swaby beat a Panther forward to the ball. She cleared the ball out of the box which would have been an open net goal for Pitt in the 10th minute of the game.
- Junior Carly Leipzig had three shots for the Eagles. Leipzig almost won the game in the first overtime with a left-footed shot from just outside the box which sailed just high over the crossbar.
