Lonergan's Hat Trick, Watts' Four Points Lead Eagles Past UVM
October 22, 2017 | Women's Hockey
Burt tied Hockey East career wins record in 4-2 win at Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Caitrin Lonergan recorded her first career hat trick – and collected four points – and freshman Daryl Watts had a hand in every goal as the No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team earned a 4-2 win at Vermont on Sunday afternoon. The victory at Gutterson Fieldhouse was the Eagles' first in Hockey East play this season.
Katie Burt made 20 saves in the win, the 52nd of her career in Hockey East play to match the league record, originally set by Melissa Bourdon (UNH '08). BC out-shot the Catamounts 37-22 on the day.
Lonergan gave Boston College (4-0-1, 1-0-1 HEA) the lead going into the first intermission with her strike at 19:33 of the first period, but Vermont (2-5-0, 1-3-0 HEA) responded at 14:53 of the second to send the teams into the third period knotted at 1-1.
Watts quickly regained the advantage for Boston College at 1:42 of the third period before Lonergan netted her second – a power-play goal – at 4:01. UVM cut the lead to 3-2 at 7:39 of the third behind Alyssa Gorecki's power-play tally, but Lonergan converted a rush from the Eagles' end to give BC breathing room and the win on the road.
Lonergan's four points today match her career high, while Watts picked up her second four-point effort of the week.
UVM goaltender Sydney Scobee made 33 saves on the day.
The Eagles return to the ice on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the team heads down Commonwealth Ave., to face rival Boston University at 3 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.

Gutterson Fieldhouse | Burlington, Vt.
- 1st, 19:33 | 1-0, BC GOAL – With a UVM penalty just expired, Toni Ann Miano skated the puck into the Catamounts' end and fed Caitrin Lonergan behind the net. Lonergan threaded it back to the near point, where Makenna Newkirk collected and returned behind the goal and around to the edge of the far faceoff circle. Daryl Watts came around the back of the net, took a short feed from Newkirk and played a pass through the crease to Lonergan stationed on the opposite post. She slammed home the puck to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with under a minute left in the first period.
- 2nd, 14:53 | 1-1, UVM GOAL (EXA) – With a penalty upcoming on the Eagles and Sydney Scobee pulled for an extra attacker, Taylor Willard pulled the puck off the boards at the point and played it across to Amanda Drobot at the other point. Drobot sent a shot in, but it was blocked in front before getting to Katie Burt, but Olivia Kilberg picked up the puck off her skated, turned and tossed a backhand under Burt to even the game.
- 3rd, 1:42 | 2-1, BC GOAL – Lonergan picked up the puck at the Eagles' blue line and fed Watts. The freshman then skated through the Vermont team in the neutral zone and UVM defensive end, finding space behind Scobee for her sixth goal of the season.
- 3rd, 4:01 | 3-1, BC GOAL (PPG) – With the Eagles resetting the power play after the puck left the zone, Newkirk picked up Miano's up-ice pass at the red line and left it for Watts coming in behind her. They took the zone together and Watts left a drop pass for Newkirk. Her shot from the hash marks was saved by Scobee, but Lonergan was alone on the doorstep to pick up the rebound and pot it past the goaltender coming across the goal.
- 3rd, 7:39 | 3-2, UVM GOAL (PPG) – While on the penalty kill, the Eagles couldn't clear along the far boards and UVM kept it in at the point. Daria O'Neill threw the puck down low behind the goal, where Ali O'Leary picked it up and curled around the near side. She sent a pass in front to Alyssa Gorecki in front, who shoveled it past Burt while falling down to pull the Catamounts within one.
- 3rd, 16:40 | 4-2, BC GOAL – Serena Sommerfield avoided the UVM forecheck and found Lonergan open to her right behind the goal. Lonergan turned and skated up and connected with Watts along the half boards, who played it back to Lonergan on the move. Lonergan sprinted through the neutral zone in front of the benches then cut inside at the blue line and cut between a trio of UVM defenders. At the hashmarks, she threw a shot on Scobee, beating her under her glove for her first career hat trick.
