Eagles look to keep unbeaten run in Burlington in tact
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team returns to the ice on Sunday, Oct. 22, when the team continues on the road to face Vermont. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m, at Gutterson Fieldhouse, and the game will be streamed live on uvmathletics.com.
Boston College (3-0-1, 0-0-1 HEA) is coming off a 2-2 tie at Connecticut on Friday night. After falling behind almost eight minutes into the first period, senior Toni Ann Miano's first goal of the season knotted it up heading into the first intermission. BC surrendered a power-play goal less than five minutes to the second, but freshman Daryl Watt's fifth goal of the season with under a minute to play in the period even it up. Despite out-shooting UConn 22-8 in the third period – and 47-30 for the game – the Eagles could not break through Huskies goaltender Annie Belanger for the go-ahead goal while Katie Burt made 28 saves in the tie.
Â
Vermont (2-4-0, 1-2-0 HEA) suffered a 5-4 home loss to New Hampshire on Friday night. After an early UNH goal, UVM scored three straight to take a 3-1 lead 3:19 into the second period. New Hampshire added a shorthanded tally a minute and a half later to pull within one, but UVM went into the second intermission with a 4-2 lead. The Wildcats cut into the lead at 2:25 of the third, then tied it up at 19:48 with an extra attacker. UNH then netted the game-winner with 18 seconds left in the overtime period.
Â
Vermont's two wins have come over UConn (2-1 in Storrs on Oct. 7) and Union (7-0 in Burlington on Oct. 10). The Catamounts have dropped their last four games, including a pair to Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., last weekend.
Â
Four BC players bring four-game point streaks into Sunday's contest: Watts (5-5-10), sophomore Caitrin Lonergan (3-6-9), Miano (1-6-7) and junior Makenna Newkirk (2-4-6).
Â
Sophomore Eve-Audrey Picard leads the Catamounts in scoring, posting five goals and adding two assists for seven points in six games. Junior Saana Valkama has added six points (2 goals, 4 assists), while freshman Kristina Shanahan (2-3-5) and junior Alyssa Groecki (1-4-5) both have five points.
Â
In goal, UVM has used two 'tenders, with Melissa Black starting four games and Sydney Scobee starting two. Scobee has a 2.01 GAA and a .940 save percentage to go with a 1-1-0 record, while Black has a 3.20 GAA, .895 save percentage and a 1-3-0 mark.
Â
BC leads the all-time series, 39-3-3, including a 17-0-2 mark in Burlington. The Eagles have won the last 12 meetings, and are 21-0-3 in the last 24 contests dating back to November 2009. BC won all four meetings last year, including 3-2 (OT) and 3-0 wins in Burlington, a 7-2 win at Kelley Rink and a 4-3 double-overtime win in the Hockey East Tournament semifinals.
Following Sunday's game, the Eagles return to the ice next Saturday, October 28, when they head down Commonwealth Ave., to face Boston University in the first of at least three editions of the #BattleOfCommAve at 3 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
