Already conquered at home, the Eagles look to take down these opponents on the road
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After two weekends in Power Gym, Boston College volleyball will take to the road to rematch Clemson and Georgia Tech – the two teams in the ACC that the Eagles have conquered. The match against Clemson will take place Friday night at 7 p.m., then the Eagles will head to Georgia Tech on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
Â
BC met up with Syracuse and Pittsburgh this past weekend, both of which the Eagles have faced previously this season. Freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu had a career game against Pitt, notching a .846 hitting percentage and breaking the program record for hitting in a single match. Graduate Lynn Braakhuis led the charge on the weekend with 18 kills while sophomore Jane DeJarld registered 32 assists. Sophomore Jill Strockis paced the defense with 30 total digs and is now seventh in ACC with 3.93 digs per set.
Â
During their last meetup, BC slated their first three-set victory of 2017 over Clemson. The Tigers have yet to win an ACC match and are 5-15 overall. The Eagles recorded 41 kills to the Tigers' 27, 35 assists to their 26 and 34 digs to their 23. Last season, BC only challenged Clemson once and fell in five sets in South Carolina.
Â
Clemson's team leaders include Kaylin Korte in kills (209), Caroline Pearson in assists (452) and Madi Howell in digs (239).
Â
Following a first-set stumble, BC took the win over Georgia Tech during the first 2017 meeting. The Eagles achieved a .318 hitting percentage and registered 62 kills to GT's 54. The Yellow Jackets will host Syracuse Friday, but are currently 8-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play having tallied wins over Clemson, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Â
Georgia Tech is led by Gabriela Stavnetchei's 277 kills and 198 digs. She had 20 kills against BC in Power Gym and seven digs. Gabby Benda's 463 assists also paces the Yellow Jackets and she tallied 18 at the last meeting.
Â
"Anytime you play a team in their gym, they're a little more comfortable," said head Coach Chris Campbell when asked about play the pair in their own gyms. "The serving and passing aspect of the game is a little bit easier for the home team and that's a huge part of every match, so those will be challenges for us in both of those places. They're also both great home college environments. You get a good crowd, they're loud, they're into it. It's fun to play in both of those places, but it's really important that we nurture our team chemistry and our bonds between players. Hopefully, those are really strong going into the weekend, because those are really the only things you rely on when you're there – what you bring for your own support because you're not going to get it from anyone else in the gym."
Â
Sunday's match at Georgia Tech will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
