Freshman running back rushed for 272 yards and four TDs last week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College freshman running back AJ Dillon and Assumption senior quarterback Marc Monks are this week's recipients of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Awards presented by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Â
Dillon, a native of New London, Conn. and a graduate of Lawrence Academy, was also named as the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 272 yards (the third highest total in school history) and four touchdowns in the Eagles' 45-42 victory at Louisville.
Â
The Gold Helmet Awards are presented each Wednesday afternoon at the weekly New England Football Writers Association Media Luncheons that take place at Harvard University's Dillon Field House. For the third straight year, the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.
Â
It was the latest honor for Dillon this week after also earned ACC Rookie of the Week and co-ACC Offensive Back of the Week accolades.
Â
Dillon was also named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance at Louisville.
Â
He finished the day with a career-high 272 yards on 39 carries, his first career 200-yard game. It was the fifth-best single-game performance in the nation in 2017 and the most yards in a game by a true freshman this season.
Â
Dillon finished with the third-best single-game rushing total in school history and the most ever by a true freshman in Boston College history. It was also the second-best rushing performance by a freshman in ACC history.
Â
The four rushing touchdowns tied for the third-best performance in BC single-game history. Andre Williams (2013 vs. Army) and Montel Harris (2009 vs. NC State) hold the school record with five rushing touchdowns in a game.
Â
It was the first 200-yard rushing game for a Boston College player since Andre Williams rushed for 295 yards at New Mexico State (Nov. 9, 2013).
Â
Boston College returns to action Saturday, Oct. 21 at Virginia. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. with broadcast coverage on NESN and the BC IMG Sports Network.
