Junior defenseman Casey Fitzgerald's OT winner in Providence yields weekly honor
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Junior defenseman Casey Fitzgerald was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after a big performance on Sunday afternoon, walking off the No. 13 Eagles to victory in overtime in Providence.
The North Reading, Mass. native notched his second-career two-goal game (at Holy Cross – Oct. 22, 2016), including the overtime winner 69 seconds into the extra session to give the Eagles their first win of the season.
The last time Boston College scored an overtime winner was when his older brother, Ryan Fitzgerald, scored the walkoff winner in game three of the Hockey East quarterfinals two years ago on March 13, 2016.
Fitzgerald's goals stand as his 10th and 11th tallies as an Eagle on the blue line. Fitzgerald's game-winning goal stands as the third of his career as the North Reading, Mass. native accounted for a pair last season.
The junior captain is joined by Hockey East Player of the Week Michael McNicholas (New Hampshire) and Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week John Leonard (UMass).
Boston College takes its first overnight trip of the season this weekend when it takes on No. 4 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21. Friday's game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET while Saturday's contests will be played at 8 p.m.
