BC HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES
- Boston College stormed back from a three-goal deficit to win for the first time since November 16, 2012 when the Eagles came back and beat Merrimack at home, 4-3.
- Casey Fitzgerald notched his second-career two-goal game (at Holy Cross – Oct. 22, 2016), including the overtime winner 69 seconds into the extra session to give the Eagles their first win of the season. The last time Boston College scored an overtime winner was when his older brother, Ryan, scored the walkoff winner in game three of the Hockey East quarterfinals two years ago on March 13, 2016. Fitzgerald's goals stand as his 10th and 11th tallies as an Eagle. Fitzgerald's game-winning goal stands as the third of his career as the North Reading, Mass. native accounted for a pair last season.
- Freshman forward Christopher Grando made his mark in the maroon and gold, becoming the first Eagle of the season to score in back-to-back contests. The Islip, N.Y. native is tied for the team lead with two goals through the first three games of the season.
- Logan Hustko joined Grando on the pointstreak train, providing the assist on both of Grando's tallies this season. Hutsko also became the first Eagle to post a multi-point game this season as the Tampa, Fla. native assisted on Casey Fitzgerald's tally, as well. Hutsko and Grando are the first two Eagles with points in consecutive games this season.
- Graham McPhee became the next Eagle to score a goal in consecutive outings after making it a 3-3 affair to start the third. McPhee joins Grando and Fitzerald as BC's two-goal getters in the early goings this season. McPhee's tally was also the equalizer at 3:47 of the third period, standing as his first-career game-tying goal. McPhee also added an assist for his third-career multi-point game and first with one goal and one assist.
- Aapeli Rasanen picked up his first point of the season with help on Grando's goal at 7:29 of the second period. Jacob Tortora logged his first-career assist as an Eagle while Connor Moore notched his first point on the season with an assist on McPhee's tally.
GOAL DESCRIPTIONS
FIRST GOAL (1-0 – Providence) FIRST PERIOD – Shane Kavanaugh – 7:18 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Providence attacked first on a set faceoff play to Joseph Woll's right side in BC territory. Jason O'Neill cleanly won the draw back to Shane Kavanaugh on the left circle and had wasted no time zipping it top shelf past Woll at 7:18 of the first period for the 1-0 Friar lead.
SECOND GOAL (2-0 – Providence) SECOND PERIOD – Spenser Young – 1:28 – EVEN STRENGTH
• In the opening exchanges of the second period, the Friars doubled their lead with a long-range attempt from Spenser Young at 1:28. Kavanagh slid the disc atop the zone to Spenser on the right circle and he released the shot through traffic, beat Woll underneath his pad to make it a 2-0 Providence advantage.
THIRD GOAL (3-0 – Providence) SECOND PERIOD – Brandon Duhaime – 5:16 – EVEN STRENGTH
• The Friars attacked shortly after Young's tally at 5:16 on a rebound in front. Chase Zieky got the puck into Vincent Desharnais and he bounced it off of Woll high. With the puck bobbling around in the crease, Brandon Duhaime scooped in and roofed the carom to extend the lead, 3-0.
FOURTH GOAL (3-1 – Boston College) SECOND PERIOD – Christopher Grando – 7:29 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Boston College curbed the Friars' three-goal stretch on a rebound from Christopher Grando at 7:29. Aapeli Rasanen dug the puck out from behind the boards and linked up with Logan Hutsko through traffic between the circles. As the Providence defense shifted over, Hutsko blasted a slapshot off of Hawkey's pads and Grando was in perfect position on the far side to roof the rebound and cut into PC's advantage, 3-1.
FIFTH GOAL (3-2 – Boston College) SECOND PERIOD – Casey Fitzgerald – 10:26 – EVEN STRENGTH
• The Eagles scored three minutes later to make it a one-goal game at 10:26 of the second period. Hutsko made a great play in the trenches, giving chase to a puck in between the circles and wrangling it out to Luke McInnis on the right dot. Casey Fitzgerald skated in from the blue line, accepted McInnis's pass and flung it right past Hawkey in the left circle at 10:26 to close the gap to one, 3-2.
SIXTH GOAL (3-3 – Boston College) THIRD PERIOD – Graham McPhee – 3:44 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Graham McPhee made it three unanswered goals at 3:47 of the third after Connor Moore and Jacob Tortora set him up on the doorstep. Moore raced the puck into Providence's zone, took it behind the net and flung it back to the point where Jacob Tortora skated it back down the wall. McPhee skated in past the defense and Tortora made a beautiful pass over a Friar stick where McPhee was able to chip it over Hawkey on the backhand attempt to lock it up, 3-3.
SEVENTH GOAL (4-3 – Boston College) OVERTIME – Casey Fitzgerald – 1:09 – EVEN STRENGTH
• McPhee continued with his excellent play by making a huge play in Providence's end, breaking up an attempted Friar slapshot and turning it up ice. McPhee streaked through the middle, connecting with Jacob Tortora who deferred back to the middle. McPhee passed up to Christopher Brown and the puck kicked off his stick where Fitzgerald decended into the play and ripped it off the cross bar. The puck came down and just slipped over the goal line to give the Eagles the overtime, 4-3, triumph on the road.
