Seniors are two of 16 selected for new National Developmental Squad
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Graduating seniors Emily and Eryn McCoy have earned two of the 16 spots on USA Field Hockey's National Development Squad, which is a new program in the U.S. field hockey development pyramid.
Â
New U.S. Women's National Team head coach Janneke Schopman worked to introduce the new program last fall to help with players' transitions from the Under-21 program to the full national team.
Â
In USA Field Hockey's announcement of the squad, Schopman noted: ""The Developmental Squad or Shadow National Team, as I'd like to call it, completes the pipeline for all athletes in college and therefore will make transition to the National Team easier. At the same time it provides an opportunity for players who just fall short of the senior national team to keep playing and practicing, giving them extra time to get ready for the national team. It is something that is needed as we don't have a good system in place to play after college."
Â
The McCoys completed their heralded collegiate careers at The Heights this fall. They will join 14 other players on the squad: Abby Barker (Michigan State), Carly Celkos (Penn State), Isabella Delario (UMass), Caleigh Foust (Virginia), Karlie Heistand (UConn), Dani Hemeon (Iowa), Kellie Joyce (New Hampshire), Natalie Konerth (American), Ainsley McCallister (Michigan), Erin McCrudden (Louisville), Megan Miller (Richmond), Kasey Tapman (Maryland), Sarah Thornhill (Wake Forest) and Carissa Vittese (Virginia).
Â
Jun Kentwell, who is currently the head coach of the U.S. National Indoor Team, will serve as the head coach of the National Developmental Team.
Â
Emily McCoy, a 2015 All-American and three-time NFHCA All-Northeast Region player, was a mainstay on the Eagles' attack. McCoy finished the season with five goals and 13 points while starting all 20 games. She earned second-team All-ACC honors and finished her career tied for 10th on the Eagles' career goals chart (34) and 11th on the career points ranking (84). She was also the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 1 after standout performances against No. 16 Harvard and No. 3 Connecticut.
Â
For her career, Emily finished 11th on BC's career scoring chart with 84 points, tied for ninth in goals (34) and added 16 assists. She was seventh in her career in shots (186) and tied for sixth in games played (82).
Â
Eryn McCoy also picked up her third career all-region honor this year. The senior finished her final campaign with 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) to rank third on the team. She started all 20 games this season. She had a hat trick at Northeastern and later added a goal and an assist at No. 8 Louisville in a 3-1 win.
Â
Eryn closed her career ranked 10th on the Eagles' career scoring chart (85 points) and tied for ninth in goals (34). She had 17 assists in her career and was tied for fourth in shots (213). Her 82 games played also tied for sixth at BC.
Â
Per USA Field Hockey, the Developmental Squad will attend several training camps throughout the year between March and May, where they will train and scrimmage against the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team and college teams. In June, they will compete as a team at the Young Women's National Championship in Lancaster County, Pa.
