A pair of sailors and a triathlete will represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games
As the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics formally get underway tonight with the Opening Ceremony, three former Boston College student-athletes are ready to take the world's largest athletic stage and represent the United States.
Â
Out on Guanabara Bay, Annie Haeger '12 and Briana Provancha '12 will compete in the 470 race as part of the U.S. sailing delegation. Their competition gets underway on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The duo is well-prepped for the event, having won the 2015 Olympic Test Event in Rio. Haeger is the 2015 US Sailing Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year while Provancha is a former Youth World Champion. This is the first Olympics for both women.
Â
On Thursday, Aug. 18, Joe Maloy '08 take to the water, land and road for the Olympic triathlon competition, which will be held at Fort Copacabana. Maloy, a former swimmer at BC, currently holds the top finish by a U.S. man in the past four years after earning sixth at ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast on April 9. Maloy is a former USA Triathlon Elite National Champion and finished 16th at the Rio de Janeiro ITU World Olympic Qualification Event on Aug. 2, 2015.
In addition to the trio of Olympians, two members of the Boston College fencing team are in Rio serving as training partners. Peter Souders '12 and incoming freshman Brendan Anderson (a modern pentathlete) are both at the Games helping other Olympians prep for competition.Â
