
Trezza Joins Baseball Staff as Associate Head Coach

The New York native brings eight years of Northeast coaching experience to The Heights
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Alex Trezza has been named the associate head baseball coach, head coach Mike Gambino announced on Tuesday. The Middletown, N.Y., native comes to the Eagles after a two-year stint at the helm of Long Island Brooklyn program and brings eight years of coaching experience and 12 years of playing experience to The Heights.

Trezza, Stony Brook's first All-American, will work with the BC pitching staff and catching core.

It is critically important in our program to develop players as people, athletes and students and Alex is the perfect fit to be a part of that process. He has a tremendous background in both collegiate and professional baseball and he is going to do an unbelievable job making our pitchers and catchers better, as well helping our boys grow into men.

This past season in Brooklyn, Trezza saw sophomore pitcher Baylor LapPointe collect All-Northeast Conference Second-Team honors and earn NEC Pitcher of the Week accolades twice. Under his watch, the Blackbirds boasted the Northeast Conference's top GPA. In 2015, Trezza had three players named to All-NEC – outfielder Tommy Jakubowski earned first-team honors while first baseman Mark Hernandez and pitcher Bobby Maxwell were named to the second team.

Before the start of the season, Trezza was a featured presenter at the 2016 World Baseball Coaches' Convention at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. His presentations included "The Hierarchy of Catching" and "The Prepared Catcher."

Before his time with the Blackbirds, Trezza was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Sacred Heart. In 2014, he helped the Pioneers reached the Northeast Conference Tournament championship game. Two players were named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans while senior pitcher Kody Kerski was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

In 2013 and 2012, Trezza was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at New Haven. In 2013, Trezza helped lead New Haven to a 34-16 record and its first-ever Northeast-10 Championship. The Chargers went on to earn the No. 3 seed at the NCAA East Region Championship and won their first NCAA postseason game since 2003. In his time at UNH, he worked with one All-American, six All-Region and eight Northeast-10 All-Conference players. In addition, he helped mentor three eventual professional players, including pitcher Henry Hirsch, a 22nd-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Trezza served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Adelphi University in 2010-11. The Panthers recorded a 36-win season, a Northeast-10 Conference Championship and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament. The team had seven All NE-10 Conference honorees and the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament MVP. Trezza helped mentor five future professional players, including pitcher Rob Nixon, who was drafted in the 46th round by the Cleveland Indians.

Trezza started his coaching career at Anna Maria College in 2009, where he served as the top assistant and helped guide the squad to a record 21 wins and postseason berths in the TCCC Conference and ECAC championships.

Before his coaching days, Trezza was a standout player at Stony Brook. He earned Freshman of The Year and New York State Baseball Conference Player of the Year honors in his first season in 1999 after hitting 17 home runs and driving in 55 RBIs as a shortstop. In 2001, he launched a program-best 23 home runs and was named the school's first All-American after moving behind the plate and playing first base. He holds several school records, including single-season home runs (23), career home runs (55) and career RBIs (176).

Trezza was drafted in the 18th round by the Detroit Tigers following his junior year and played four seasons in the organization. He received the Most Improved Player award in 2003 after recording 19 doubles and driving in 27 runs for High Class-A Lakeland. Following his stint with the Tigers, he signed as a free agent with the Rockies and participated in their spring training. He also spent time with the Worcester Tornadoes and the North Shore Spirit of the Can-Am League, where he led the league in 19 home runs during in 2006.

Trezza graduated from Stony Brook with a bachelor's degree in political science in 2004.
