Buffalo Selects Fitzgerald in 2016 NHL Entry Draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore defensemen Casey Fitzgerald was drafted in the third round, 86th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday morning at the First Niagara Center. Buffalo also played host to the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Fitzgerald became the eighth Eagle in program history to be drafted by the Sabres, joining current associate head coach Greg Brown (1986 – second round), Dave Pergola (1987 – fifth round), David Littman (1987 – 11th round), John Adams (2002 – third round), Nathan Gerbe (2005 – fifth round), Andrew Orpik (2005 – seventh round) and current teammate Christopher Brown (2014 – sixth round).

The North Reading, Mass. native was the 11th-most productive defensemen on the score sheet amongst all defensemen in college hockey last season and second amongst all rookies. He tallied 27 points (4-23-27) in his freshman campaign and was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team.

Casey joins brother, Ryan Fitzgerald, as an NHL draft pick. R. Fitzgerald was picked in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the hometown Boston Bruins.
