BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior right-hander Mike King picked up his sixth win of the season, going 7.2 innings. He gave up three runs on 10 hits but walked just one and retired 13 in a row between the fourth and eighth innings. King struck out five on the day.
- After tallying the win in the first game of the doubleheader, senior Jesse Adams earned his fourth save of the season, striking out two over 1.1 innings, retiring all four batters he faced. His seven career saves is tied for sixth in BC record books with classmate John Nicklas and junior Justin Dunn and his 77 career appearances is tied for fifth all-time.
- Junior Johnny Adams was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to extend his career-long hit streak to 10 games, which ties a season long for the Eagles. He now has 27 hits in the last 18 games and has reached base in the last 15 games.
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and run. He has now reached base in 38 of the Eagles' 45 games.
- Junior Michael Strem went 2-for-4 with a run to record at least one hit in 13 of the last 19 games.
- Sophomore Mitch Bigras led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, his fourth multiple-hit game of the season.
- Junior Nick Sciortino notched an RBI and scored a run. He has reached base in the last 14 games.
KEY PLAYS
- The Demon Deacons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the third inning, but while King settled in on the mound, the Eagles scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull ahead.
- King and Adams combined to shutout Wake for the final six innings to give BC the series win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wake Forest was the first to strike, notching a run in the first. Joey Rodriguez and Nate Mondou started the game with base hits and Stuart Fairchild plated Rodriguez with a single through the left side. King got a fly ball to left, which senior left fielder Gabriel Hernandez fired back in to keep the runners from tagging, and and a strikeout to put two outs on the board. Kevin Conway singled up the middle, but centerfielder Strem made a perfect throw to the plate to get Mondou and end the inning without more damage.
- The Deacons added two more in the third to go up by three. King got two quick outs but walked Fairchild and gave up a double to Will Craig to put runners on second and third. Fairchild scored on a wild pitch and Gavin Sheets brought Craig in with a base hit to right. King got out the inning with a strikeout swinging.
- The Eagles scored a run in the fifth to cut the lead to two. Johnny Adams started things with a single through the left side and moved into scoring position when senior Logan Hoggarth followed with a base hit. Bigras chopped one to second and when Wake tried to turn the double play, the first baseman Sheets couldn't hold onto the ball, allowing Adams to score.
- BC pulled ahead in the sixth, scoring three runs to take the one-run lead. Palomaki led off with a double and Strem followed with a perfectly placed bunt single to put runners on the corners. Sciortino bunted down the first-base line, scoring Palomaki and reaching after second baseman Mondou's throw went high on the attempt to get Strem at second. Senior Joe Cronin moved both runners up on a sac bunt and sophomore Scott Braren drove in Strem with a single through the right side, tying the game. Adams then grounded out to short to plate Sciortino and giving BC the 4-3 lead. A long fly ball to center ended the BC sixth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- King allowed just one walk in the game. In all 12 of his starts, he has never walked more than three batters.
- The Eagles won their fifth Atlantic Coast Conference series of the season, the most since Boston College joined the ACC in 2006.
- The Eagles' 11 conference wins is the most under sixth-year head coach Mike Gambino. The 14 wins in 2010 is BC's most ever in the ACC.
- The 27 overall wins ties a high under Gambino, which was set last season.
- BC has won nine of its last 13 games.
- The Eagles improved to 16-17 against Wake Forest in the all-time series and 13-5 in Chestnut Hill.
- BC has only allowed its opponent to score first eight times this season and come back to win five of those games.
OF NOTE
- Between the Eagles' two games against Wake Forest, Boston College honored former captain and current director of operations Pete Frates by retiring his No. 3 jersey. The only other number retired at Shea Field is the winningest coach in BC history, Eddie Pellagrini's No. 13, for which the diamond is named after.
- Frates championed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in the summer of 2014, which raised over $220 million for research and patience care. He and his entire support network continue to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for ALS.
