BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Scott Braren hit the game-winning, walk-off single in the 13th inning to give the Eagles the victory. He was 2-for-3 as a late-game substitution.
- Junior Michael Strem was 3-for-6 with a two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and send it to extras. It was his fifth double of the season and the 39th of his career.
- Junior right-handed starter Mike King threw seven innings, allowed seven hits, one run, walked three and struck out six in a no decision.
- Redshirt sophomore RHP Bobby Skogsbergh put in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
- Senior Jesse Adams picked up the win for the second straight day to improve to 4-3. He came in in the 13th and retired the side in order. His 69th career appearance ties him for ninth all-time in BC record books.
- Junior catcher Nick Sciortino caught his ninth baserunner stealing and picked off his second runner of the season.
KEY PLAY
With the bases loaded and two outs in the 13th inning, Braren hit a single to right off Chesdin Harrington to score the winning and give the Eagles the series victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth but the Eagles answered to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Karstetter led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Cameron Simmons. Justin Novak plated Karstetter with a groundout to third on a nice diving grab by senior third baseman Joe Cronin. Sciortino picked off Simmons at first for the second out and King ended the inning with a strikeout.
- BC evened the score in the bottom of the frame as Strem led off with a single through the left side. Junior Johnny Adams moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt and senior Logan Hoggarth plated him with a base hit up the middle.
- The Eagles' defense was on display in the sixth inning. The Cavs had runners on the corners after Ernie Clement doubled down the third-base line, Matt Thaiss walked and Clement stole third. Pavin Smith flied to right and as Clement tagged up and came home, sophomore right fielder Donovan Casey fired it on a line to Sciortino, who tagged Clement for a double play. King ended the inning with a grounder to short.
- The game had the chance to end the same way it had on Saturday as junior Chris Balogh came in to pinch hit and drew a walk. Freshman Dominic Hardaway came in to pinch run and as he stole second, catcher Thaiss' throw – for the second time in two days – skipped into the outfield, allowing Hardaway to land on third. Palomaki struck out swinging but the ball was in the dirt and Thaiss had to throw down to first. Unlike Saturday's result, he made an accurate throw, to send the game into extras.
- Virginia took a 4-1 lead in the 10th. With senior RHP John Nicklas on the mound – who had thrown two scoreless innings of relief – got the first out before giving up a single to Adam Haseley. Clement moved him over with a sac bunt before Nicklas intentionally walked Thaiss. Sophomore RHP Kevin Connor came in to face lefty Smith, who smacked the first pitch he saw over the wall in right to give UVA a 4-1 lead. Skogsbergh finished the inning with a strikeout looking.
- With the game on the line, the Eagles tied it in the 10th to continue on. With RHP Tommy Doyle on the mound, Cronin and Braren tallied back-to-back base hits to start the inning. The Hoos brought in RHP Tyler Shambora, who got a strikeout bout before hitting Sciortino to load the bases. After a foul out, Strem stepped to the plate and laced one down the left-field line to clear the bases and tie the game.
- With one out in the 13th, Johnny Adams started it for the Eagles with a one-out double to right center. Hardaway drew a walk and after a strikeout, Cronin walked to load the bases for Braren. Braren knocked Harrington's pitch to right field to score Adams and give the Eagles the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The win was the fourth for the Eagles against the Cavaliers in Chestnut Hill and the fifth in the all-time series. The last three times BC has defeated UVA it has been in walk-off fashion, including a 5-4, 11-inning victory in 2011 when Virginia was the No. 1 team in the nation.
- Although the Eagles won in walk-off fashion on Saturday, the victory on Sunday marked the first walk-off win via a hit since the final game of the 2015 season against Notre Dame on May 15 when Nick Colucci hit a walk-off single to defeat the Irish, 6-5, in 10 innings.
- The victory gives BC a 4-6 record over top-25 teams in 2016.
- The Eagles are now 2-1 in extra innings in 2016 and 1-1 in ACC games.
- Palomaki recorded a hit, was hit by a pitch and drew a walk. He has tallied at least one hit in 18 of the Eagles' 27 games and has reached base in 22 games.
- In the series with Virginia, the BC pitching staff allowed just five earned runs over 31 innings.
- The 13-inning victory, which took five hours and one minute, was the longest BC game since the 15-inning, 9-4 loss to NC State on March 21, 2015, which lasted five hours and six minutes.
- The 13-inning game was also the longest ACC matchup so far in 2016.
