Eagles will face Maryland Dec. 26 in Detroit at Ford Field
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College has accepted an invitation to the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl and will face Maryland of the Big Ten. ESPN will televise the Quick Lane Bowl live from Ford Field in Detroit on Monday, Dec. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
Â
The Quick Lane Bowl is the 25th bowl appearance in school history for Boston College and the 15th bowl in the last 18 years for the Eagles. Steve Addazio is the second coach in school history (Jack Bicknell) to lead the Eagles to three bowls in the first four seasons.
Â
"We are excited to continue our season and play in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit," said Boston College Director of Athletics Brad Bates. "This is a great opportunity for our program to continue to develop and gives our players one final opportunity to play together to close out the season."
Â
The game will be the 12th all-time meeting between the two schools and the first since Maryland was in the ACC in 2013. The Eagles lead the series, 8-3, and have won the last three meetings. Boston College won the last game at Byrd Stadium, 29-26, on Nov. 23, 2013. Maryland has not won in the series since a 24-21 victory at Alumni Stadium on Oct. 23, 2010.
Â
Maryland finished the season 6-6 overall and 3-6 in the Big Ten under first-year head coach D.J. Durkin.
Â
Nine of the 11 all-time games played between the two Eastern schools came in ACC play. The series began in 1985 with the Terrapins winning, 31-13, over Boston College in Foxboro.
Â
It marks the second time Boston College will play a bowl game at Ford Field in Detroit after winning the 2002 Motor City Bowl with a 51-25 victory over Toledo. The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first six possessions in the first bowl game played at Ford Field.
Â
Boston College ranked as one of the nation's top defenses the entire season. Currently, the Eagles rank seventh in the nation and first in the ACC in total defense allowing just 310.6 yards per game. BC has allowed just 106.9 rushing yards per game, seventh-best nationally and second in the conference.Â
Â
BC is also among the top-20 defenses nationally in third-down conversion percentage defense (12th, 31.9%), fourth-down conversion percentage defense (16th, 36.4%), first-down defense (Seventh, 184), fumbles recovered (11th, 12), sacks (Ninth, 3.25 per game) and tackles-for-loss (13th, 7.7 per game).
