BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Chris Shaw, extending his hit streak to 15 games, which is tied for fourth in BC record books, dating back to 2005. His career long is 16 games, set last year.
- Freshman Jake Palomaki led the Eagles with a 3-for-5 day, extending his on-base streak to 15 games.
- Sophomore RHP Mike King tied a career high with six strikeouts in a five-inning start. He allowed five hits, three runs -- two earned -- and did not walk a batter. He retired the first eight batters he faced and the first 11 of 12.
- Sophomore Michael Strem walked in the sixth inning. He has reached base safely in the last 16 games.
KEY PLAYS
- The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and never looked back. They added a run in the fifth and sixth innings and broke the game open with a five-run seventh.
- The Eagles mustered two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth, but the deficit was too large to overcome and Clemson took game one of the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clemson started the scoring with two in the fourth. With two down, the Tigers tallied back-to-back doubles to score one and a single plated the second run before King ended the inning with a strikeout.
- The Tigers added a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up, 4-0. With a runners on first and second, Eli White grounded to third. Palomaki stepped on the bag for the second out and threw onto first to try to get two. His throw skipped away, allowing the runner to score from first when batter Steven Duggar collided with junior first baseman Joe Cronin.
- In the sixth with junior RHP John Nicklas on the hill, Reed Rohlman drew a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double by Chase Pinder. After Pinder advanced to third on a passed ball, Nicklas came back to get the second out with a strikeout swinging. Redshirt junior LHP Tyler Hinchliffe came in to face the lefty and ended the inning with a first-pitch popup.
- Clemson made it a 9-0 game by scoring five runs in the seventh. With runners on second and third and one down, Hinchliffe intentionally walked Tyler Krieger to load the bases and try for the double play. Rohlman came through with a bases-clearing double to right center. Freshman RHP Brian Rapp relieved Hinchliffe, but immediately gave up a two-run home run to Chris Okey before getting out of the inning.
- The Tigers tacked on three more in the eighth. Redshirt freshman LHP Kevin Connor loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit by pitch. Pinch hitter Drew Wharton singled up the middle to score two before freshman RHP Trevor Massey replaced Connor. He got the first two batters swinging before allowing a bloop single to center to score a third run. Massey ended the inning with his third K.
- The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the inning, scoring two off of reliever RHP Paul Campbell. BC loaded the bases on two infield singles and a walk. With two outs, freshman Scott Braren knocked one to right center to plate two.
- Freshman LHP Carmen Giampetruzzi threw the ninth for the Eagles and gave up three runs. Glenn Batson led off with a double and Tyler Slaton drew a one-out walk, but Giampetruzzi got an infield fly for the second out. Wharton knocked a double down the left line to score both runners before the southpaw got out of the inning with strikeout swinging.
- Before the day was done, the Eagles added four runs to their total. Junior Gabriel Hernandez led off with ninth with a walk and, with one down, Palomaki singled for his third hit to put two on. Freshman Anthony Maselli belted a double off the wall in left center to plate Hernandez and put runners on second and third. Freshman Mitch Bigras followed with a base hit up the middle to score Palomaki and Hoggarth came through with the fourth straight hit to score Maselli. With runners at the corners, senior Nick Colucci grounded one to short and while Hoggarth was forced out at second, second baseman Adam Renwick's throw pulled Okey off the bag at first, allowing Bigras to score. A high popup behind home plate ended the game.
