HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
Boston College got on the board first as they took the opening set from the host Deacons by a score of 25-21. With the score tied at 20 apiece, Julia Topor registered three straight service aces that allowed the Eagles to go ahead 23-20. After getting one point back, Wake Forest committed back-to-back attack errors as BC took the 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two:
Wake Forest evened the match at one-all in the second set as the two squads battled it out in the closest frame of the evening. After trailing 6-0 to begin the set, the Eagles were down for all of the first half. Down 17-10, they used a 4-0 run, the result of two BC kills and two forced attack errors, to pull within three, 17-14. They later pulled within one at 21-20 after recording another 4-0 run in the set, and despite keeping within one point the remainder of the set, Wake's Sam Boesch tallied a kill on set-point as they two squads were tied at one heading into the break.
Set Three:
The Eagles used a 13-2 run to fuel the team in the third set, as the Maroon and Gold held the Demon Deacons to only 10 points in the 25-10 victory. With the scored tied at seven after a kill from Sol Calvete, senior Kam McLain's service ace helped jumpstart a 5-0 run. After McKenna Goss got in on the action, Brittany Pavich, Workman and Colvete each totaled at least two kills in addition to several attack errors and a ball handling error from the Black and Gold in the third as BC took the 2-1 advantage.
Set Four:
The hosts got right back into the fourth set as they battled to a 25-19 win. McKenna Goss tallied four kills in the set alone for BC, part of a seven kill performance on Friday evening for the freshman outside hitter, but Wake's Matalee Reed topped her with five kills in the set to lead the Deacs.
Set Five:
The Eagles got out early 4-0 in the deciding fifth set, but Wake Forest fought back to tie the set as five before an 8-3 run of their own powered the home squad to a 15-12 victory in the fifth and final set.
COACH QUOTE:
"We worked hard to give ourselves opportunities, then failed to take advantage of them. It felt like we got a little too relaxed after winning the third set and you just can't do that in the ACC." - Head coach Chris Campbell
UP NEXT:
The Eagles will continue their trip in North Carolina when they visit Duke on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
