KEY MOMENTS
Virginia Tech scored 20 unanswered points in the first half, posting 235 yards while holding BC to 80 yards.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia Tech got on the scoreboard first when a pair of Michael Brewer passes got the Hokies into the end zone after taking over at the BC 47-yard line. Brewer connected with Isaiah Ford for a 14-yard gain after being flushed from the pocket, then found Cam Phillips for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 6:44 left in the first quarter.
- The Hokies pushed their lead to 10-0 behind Joey Slye's 47-yard field goal with 1:13 left in the first quarter. Travon McMillian had rushes of six, five and three yards to get VTech deeper in the Eagles' half. Sophomore Harold Landry tackled Brewer for a four-yard loss on second down, but the Hokies gained two yards on the run play to get Slye an attempt under 50 yards.Â
- With 1st-and-10 on their own 35 after benefiting from a pass interference penalty, BC's freshman Jordan Gowins took the ball for a rush, but Hokie linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka tackled him at the 34, stripped the ball and ran it back for the touchdown and a 17-0 lead with 11:01 left in the second quarter.Â
- A roughing the kicker penalty on fourth-and-18 gave the Hokies life with 47 seconds left in the half, VTech strung together passes of 25-, 16- and eight-yards to put Slye in position to end the quarter with a 38-yard field goal and send the Hokies into the intermission with a 20-0 lead.Â
- Greg Stroman recorded a 31-yard punt return to get the Hokies deep in the Eagles' territory and after the BC defense held VTech to four yards on a third-and-six at the BC 14-yard line, Slye converted a 32-yard field goal to give the Hokies a 23-0 lead with 7:40 left in the third quarter.
- A pass interference penalty against Virginia Tech brought the Eagles into Hokie territory, and first downs on Myles Willis' 5-yard run and Tommy Sweeney's 18-yard catch took BC to the VTech 11-yard line. Unable to punch it into the end zone, sophomore Mike Knoll converted a 29-yard field goal with 3:26 left in the third to get BC on the board and push the score to 23-3.Â
- Boston College scored its first touchdown of the day when Richard Wilson rushed 3 yards with 8:09 left. Fadule went 3-for-3 for 60 yards - Elijah Robinson (25 yards), Tyler Rouse (20 yards) and Charlie Callinan (15 yards) - to get into the red zone, and a pass interference call brought the Eagles to 3-yard line.Â
- Virginia Tech got to Fadule in the backfield and forced a fumble at the BC 16-yard line. The Eagles defense conceded two yards and forced the Hokies to kick a field goal, which Slye converted from the 32-yard line with 1:33 left, which pushed final score to 26-10.Â
