The senior and junior were voted captains by their teammates
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College senior Joe Cronin and junior Nick Sciortino were voted team captains by their teammates for the 2015-16 season, head coach Mike Gambino announced.
"I couldn't be happier with the choice the team made to lead our clubhouse this year," Gambino said. "Three main qualities any leader must have are character, competency and commitment and Scores and Joey both score extremely high in all three categories."
Cronin, a Scarborough, Maine, native, has played 146 games for the Eagles, starting 144 of them. The versatile player has played every position in the infield, settling mostly at first base in 2015. A .238 career hitter, Cronin put together his best season as a sophomore with 59 hits, including 16 doubles and 25 RBIs. He also drew 26 walks, good for second on the team. In 2015, he notched 37 hits, including nine doubles and four home runs, 20 RBIs and 24 walks, which ranked third on the team. He was part of 18 double plays and helped the Eagles to a team .976 fielding percentage, second in the Atlantic Coast Conference and third in BC record books.
Sciortino, a catcher from Barrington, N.J., has logged 80 games for the Maroon and Gold, starting 75 of them. A career .218 hitting, the junior is known for his arm behind the plate. He has a career .986 fielding percentage and made just one error in his sophomore campaign to record a .997 percentage. He caught 17 runners stealing and picked off five more. While playing for the Chatham Anglers in the prestigious Cape Code Baseball League, he led the league with 17 runners caught stealing and tallied a .990 fielding percentage. He shared the team's Ed Lyons Coaches Award, given annually to the players who have gone above and beyond the expectations of the coaching staff who have led by example and hard work.
