Demko Broaching Historic Territory; Wins Weekly Honor
October 26, 2015 | Men's Hockey
Thatcher Demko has not let a puck cross Boston College’s goal line in 196 minutes and 58 seconds (196:58) of competition and is now the 21st goaltender in NCAA hockey history to have shutout three opponents consecutively.
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Junior goaltender Thatcher Demko was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Eagles get off to their best defensive start in program history.
The San Diego native has not let a puck cross Boston College's goal line in 196 minutes and 58 seconds (196:58) of competition and is now the 21st goaltender in NCAA hockey history to have shutout three opponents consecutively.
Demko is chasing Scott Clemmensen's record set during the 1997-98 season of keeping opponents scoreless for 254:23.
The Eagles swept Colorado College on the road, 3-0 and 5-0, respectively, on Oct. 23-24 after a 6-0 romp against Wisconsin on Oct. 16 in the home opener. The last goal BC surrendered occurred at Rensselaer on Oct. 11 at the 3:02 mark of the third period.
In allowing only three goals in BC's first five regulation games, the Eagles are off to their best defensive start in program history. Boston College's 0.60 goals allowed per game through the first five contests of the season is the lowest mark in BC's 94 years of varsity hockey.
The last closest effort occurred twice when the Eagles yielded six goals in five games to start both the 1951-52 and 1963-64 seasons.
Boston College's three-consecutive shutouts marks only the fourth time in Boston College history that phenomenon has transpired. Cory Schneider (2005-06), Clemmensen (1997-98) and 1919-20 were the only other seasons for that to occur.
Demko's mark of three-consecutive shutouts is bordering historic territory as he is now one of 21 goaltenders in college hockey history to have posted a string of three blankings. Charlie Lindgren of St. Cloud State also turned the trick this season.
With Demko's impressive run, the Eagles are now the only program in college hockey history to have strung together three-straight shutouts on three separate occasions. Cornell, Maine, Denver and Colgate have all done it twice.
Demko is chasing NCAA record-holding Lake Superior State's Blaine Lacher, who charted five-sraight shutouts from March 4-14, 1994 in a total of 375:01 minutes.
The 6-foot-4 backstopper earned his sixth-career shutout is now tied for sixth all-time at Boston College with six career shutouts. He is now tied with Parker Milner (2009-13) and Joe Carroll (1951-54).
The junior's 0.60 goals against average is best in the nation currently and his .974 save percentage is second to Nebraska Omaha's freshman Evan Weninger (.980), who has only played in two games thus far.
