HIGHLIGHTS
Boston College forced Virginia into extra points in two of the night's three sets, but the Cavaliers were too much for the Eagles Friday night at Power Gym. Leading the Maroon and Gold was Katty Workman, who recorded 11 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season, while Kam McLain recorded six kills and Sol Calvete an additional five.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
With the score notched at nine apiece, the Cavaliers went on a 10-3 run and took their largest lead of the day, going up 19-12 on the Eagles. Following a Virginia attack error and a Workman kill to cut the deficit to five, the two squads exchanged back-and-forth points that saw the visitors take a 21-16 lead. After Virginia took the next three, BC responded with three of their own, but a kill from Natalie Bausback ended the first set, 25-18 in favor of the Cavs.
Set Two:
The second set featured 10 tie scores and three changes, and despite forcing extra points, Virginia came away victorious in the set to head into the break with a 2-0 advantage. Trailing 10-6, the Maroon and Gold fired off four of the next five points to bring the score within one at 11-10. The BC defense forced three straight attack errors and after a matching error from BC, Julia Topor tallied one of her nine kills on the evening. Boston College would later chip away at a five point deficit and tie the score at 20-all. They continued to show a valiant effort, and tied the score at 21-all, 22-all, 23-all and 24-all, courtesy of kills from Workman and Topor and two forced attack errors from the BC defense. After tying the score again at 25, the Cavaliers finished off the Eagles in the second set, the result of a bad set by BC and a kill from a UVa outside hitter.
Set Three:
The third set featured four lead changes as the Eagles and Cavaliers battled it out in a set that went to extra points for the second straight frame. After a quick 3-0 deficit, Boston College fought back and tied it at five-all after back-to-back attack errors caused by the BC defense. Kam McLain and Brittany Pavich had key blocks during the span and the Eagles took a four-point lead, going up 15-11. After a called UVa timeout that resulted in the visitors re-tying the set at 15-all, the two squad battled back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the set. With the score tied at 25, the Cavaliers two leading point scorers, Natalie Bausback and Kayla Sears, tallied two straight kills to take the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
COACH QUOTES:
"It was good to see the fight again. As a group, we weren't happy with our performance on Wednesday against Syracuse. I give a real credit to this team to be able, in a very short turn-around with only a one-day break, to come back put [that effort] out on the court. We lost to a very good team and we had opportunities. We have make sure we spend less time focusing on what we are doing in those last two points and more time focusing on what we do in the first 20. There are opportunities within those first 20 points where we can pick up some easy points, and we're just not doing that. We are not taking easy points and creating some separation in our lead, so it stays a two point lead instead of extending it to three or four or five point lead. That's what we have to fix.
UP NEXT:
After having the remainder of the weekend off, the Eagles will undergo a week of practice before hitting the road for a quick two-game road trip in the Sunshine State. The Eagles first travel to Coral Gables, Fla. next Friday, October 23, for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Miami Hurricanes before taking on nationally ranked Florida State in Tallahassee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
