Orono, Maine - Despite outshooting Maine, 34-29, the Black Bears managed to find the back of the net a few more times as Boston College suffered a 5-1 setback in front of a sold out Alfond Arena crowd.
Rookie blueliner Scott Savage scored his second goal of the season while junior forward Johnny Gaudreau kept his point streak intact with the primary assist. Gaudreau has accounted for 16 points (9-7-16) throughout the eight-game scoring stretch. First-year blue liner Ian McCoshen logged his fourth helper on the year.
Junior goaltender Brian Billett started the first two periods, turning aside 17-of-21 shots. Classmate Brad Barone came in relief for the third frame, stopping seven shots on eight Black Bear attempts.
Maine goaltender Martin Ouellette had a big night with 33 stops. Both Devin Shore and Ben Hutton logged a pair of tallies in the victory.
Maine pounced early on a broken play in the neutral zone. Connor Leen corralled the puck off the red line and turned it up towards Billett. Shore streaked down the middle and buried the one-timer pass out front 37 seconds into the contest for the quick 1-0 advantage.
Maine added another four minutes later thanks to Hutton at 4:38. Josh Henke picked up a rebound from BC's end and scooted the disc up to Hutton on the right side of the sheet. Hutton broke around his pursuer and roofed a backhander for the 2-0 lead.
Ryan Lomberg padded Maine's first-period lead with the Black Bears' third tally at 14:32. Jon Swavely connected with Lomberg from the left side after he gathered the initial rebound in heavy traffic. Lomberg managed to get enough lumber on the puck to shovel it past Billett.
Boston College curbed Maine's goal-scoring spurt late in the first period.
McCoshen triggered the scoring play, hammering his patented slap shot through traffic. The puck was tipped and came out to the stick of Gaudreau in the far corner. Gaudreau cradled it and quickly provided Savage with the puck just below the right dot to finish off the scoring play at 17:27 to cut into Maine's lead, 3-1.
Shore was whistled for tripping early on in the second stanza, but after Maine killed it, momentum swung back towards the Black Bears and Shore added his second of the night.
Steven Swavely honed in on Billett with a strong shot and the initial block was in place, but Shore cut in perfect position to paddle back the rebound with the backhand at 8:32 for the 4-1 lead.
The Eagles killed off McCoshen and Gaudreau penalties at 9:57 and 14:21, respectively, of the third period, but just as Gaudreau's expired, Hutton tallied his second of the night at 16:26. Senior Bill Arnold blocked two shots at the point, but Hutton gathered Shore's second blast just within the blue line and ripped it past Barone at 16:26 to ice the contest, 5-1.
Boston College will return to action against Holy Cross on the Friday after Thanskgiving at Kelley Rink. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Eagles will close ommt the first half of the season in a home and home series against New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7.
