WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest scored five unanswered runs late in the game on Easter Sunday to win the series finale against the Boston College baseball team, 5-3, at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Sophomore Pat Dean started on the mound and got the no decision after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three.
At the plate, junior Mike Belfiore went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. It was his third multiple home run game of the season and he now has nine on the year. Junior Robbie Anston also went 2-for-4 for the Eagles.
BC was the first to get on the board in the top of the fourth when Belfiore drilled a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for a solo home run to put BC up 1-0.
Boston College added another run in the fifth. Sophomore Mike Sudol led off and singled past the diving second baseman and then on a full count, freshman Brad Zapenas hit the gap in right for a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Anston grounded into a 4-6-3 double play but Sudol scored to push the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
The Demon Deacons tied the game in the next two innings with a single run in both the sixth and seventh. With one out in the sixth, Shane Kroker doubled down the line in left and Dustin Hood followed suit with a two-bagger to the gap in left to put Wake on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Wake Forest tied the game in the seventh after the first two batters were retired. Bentley Heyman and Austin Stadler both singled to put runners on the corners. Steven Brooks then hit the gap in right to bring home Heyman and Stadler tried to score from first, but Zapenas' relay from short-center was on the money to Sanchez at the plate to keep the go-ahead run off the board.
The Demon Deacons put up three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a three-run lead. Kroker led off with a single and then Hood sacrificed him up to scoring position. Mike Murray walked to put two men on with one out and then Weldon Woodall singled up the middle to put Wake up for the first time, 3-2.
A walk to Tyler Smith loaded the bases for Wake and then Evan Ocheltree reached on an error that allowed two more runs to score to put the Demon Deacons up 5-2.
Belfiore led off the top of the ninth with another solo home run, this time to left-center, to pull the Eagles within two runs but that is all Boston College could get across.
Kroker went 3-for-4 for Wake Forest (19-15, 6-12 ACC) with a double and a pair of runs. Brooks and Hood both had a double and an RBI. Zach White picked up the win after throwing 1.1 innings. He allowed one run on two hits.
Boston College (22-12, 9-7 ACC) will travel back to campus tonight and then get right back between the lines for the Beanpot consolation game tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. when the Eagles take on Harvard at historic Fenway Park. All tickets are general admission and cost just $5.
