DeLand, Fla. - Freshman Mike Dennhardt was stellar in his first career start, throwing 6.2 innings of four-hit ball to lead the Boston College baseball team to a 7-2 victory at Stetson Saturday to sweep the four-game series with the Hatters.
Dennhardt allowed two runs in the first inning but settled in and dominated the next five innings. He retired nine in a row at one point and 16 out of 17. He finished with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Sophomore Mickey Wiswall and redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence both had three RBI on the day. Wiswall hit his second homer in as many games and Lawrence blasted a pair of doubles. Freshman Brad Zapenas and junior Tony Sanchez also recorded a pair of hits.
Boston College wasted no time getting on the board and put up four runs in the top of the first. Junior Robbie Anston worked a full count to lead off the game and reached when Mark Jones committed an error at second on a ground ball. He then stole second and on the next pitch, Zapenas bunted down the third base line. Robert Crews couldn't get it out of his glove and Zapenas got the hit to put runners on the corners.
Sanchez then took a 2-0 pitch and drove it over the left fielder's head to score Anston and put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Wiswall drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly to deep center and junior Mike Belfiore reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Sanchez scored on the play to make it 3-0. Sophomore Garret Smith then nailed a single up the middle to score Belfiore.
The Hatters responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to cut the lead in half. Frawley forced a walk with one out and then Jeremy Cruz snuck a base hit through the right side of the infield to put runners on the corners. Aaron Crittenden got Frawley home from third with a deep foul out to right field and then Crews singled to left to plate Cruz who got to second on the sacrifice fly.
BC got one of those runs back in the second when Lawrence started the frame with a double that hit the base of the wall in dead center. Anston advanced him to third with a slow chopper to the third baseman and Zapenas continued his torrid streak with a double to right center to make it 5-2 Eagles.
Wiswall added two more runs in the top of the seventh when he belted a two-run homer over the right field wall - his second home run in as many games.
BC returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on the Boston Red Sox at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
