Westwood, Mass. - Junior captain Jenna McCabe scored her fourth goal of the day off a pass from classmate Lauren Fitzpatrick with eight seconds remaining in the game to give the Eagles a 12-11 win over Vermont on Wednesday evening. McCabe and Fitzpatrick both extended their scoring streaks to 13 games as the duo has notched a point in every match this season. The Eagles improved to 5-8 on the season, while the Catamounts fell to 7-7.
Vermont took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in one minute before the 22-minute mark. The Eagles evened the score on two free position shots, one by McCabe and one by freshman Jill Rekart.
It took 10 minutes for either team to break the tie, but the Catamounts were able to take back the lead when Alison Haigh netted a goal off a pass from Kristen Millar. Millar finished the day at the top of the box score with five points on two goals and three assists.
After a goal by Emilie Clark, sophomore Sarah Sedgwick cut the lead to one on a breakaway goal off a draw control. Clark retaliated with her second score only 30 seconds later, and Millar increased the lead to three with two minutes to play. Fitzpatrick notched her first of the day off a pass from sophomore Lauren Costello with only one minute remaining in the half and BC went into the locker room down 6-4.
The Eagles came out firing in the second half as they scored five consecutive goals in under five minutes. Fitzpatrick scored with only 20 seconds ticked off the clock, while McCabe put up two and Sedgwick and Costello each contributed with one. After trading goals, the Catamounts went on a steak of their own, putting up four scores to take a 11-10 lead.
With less than four minutes to play, Costello tied the score on her third of day for her fourth hat trick of the season. The Eagles held the ball for the last three minutes to look for the final shot. With only eight seconds remaining on the clock, Fitzpatrick found McCabe cutting to the goal and nailed her teammate. McCabe scored her first game-winning goal of the season to give the Eagles their fifth win.
BC outshot UVM, 33-25, and collected 17 ground balls to the Catamounts' 13. Junior Maura Mahoney led BC with four ground balls. UVM edged out BC in draw controls, 14-11. Junior Katie Monaghan made seven saves while Meaghan Hanley recorded 10.
Boston College returns to action on Saturday, April 19 to face Holy Cross at noon at Westwood High School. The Eagles will honor their three seniors before the game.
