Amherst, Mass. - Boston College fell, 13-10, to Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped to 2-5 on the season, while the Minutewomen improved to 2-6. Junior captain Jenna McCabe and sophomore Lauren Costello led the team with four points each.
McCabe scored the first two goals to put the Eagles on top in the first five minutes of the game. UMass netted four straight scores to take the lead. With 19:21 to play in the first half, junior Lauren Fitzpatrick recorded an unassisted goal to pull BC within one.
The Minutewomen went back up three off goals by Kathleen Typadis and Haley Smith, but the Eagles tied the game when Fitzpatrick nailed two in a row, followed by a McCabe goal. All three scores were assisted by Costello. With 3:25 to go, Typadis netted her seventh goal of the season to put UMass up one heading into halftime.
UMass's Kaytlin McCormick netted three consecutives goals to start the second stanza and give the Minutewomen the their largest lead of the day. Junior Peyton Killeen converted a free position shot and Costello scored her only goal of the game to bring the Eagles back within striking distance with 22:40 left to play.
It would be the closest the Eagles would come as the Minutewomen scored three more times before time expired. Freshmen Jull Rekart and Kate Horsman each recorded goals before the horn sounded.
Shots were almost even, as the Eagles tallied 28 to the Minutewomen's 27. BC recovered 16 ground balls while UMass picked up 12, but the Minutewomen controlled 18 draws to BC's seven.
Freshman goalie Sheila Serafino played 9:16 and gave up four goals. Junior Katie Monaghan played the remaining 50:44 and made five saves. Junior Emily Hannigan led the team with four caused turnovers.
The Eagles will play crosstown rival Boston University on Wednesday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Terrier's home field.
