Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles Softball squad fell 5-4 to Boston University in the second game of today's exciting doubleheader at Shea Field. The Eagles won game one in dramatic fashion on the strength of senior Ashley Obrest's sixth-inning homerun, but their bid for an afternoon sweep fell just short.
BC sent freshman Taylor Peyton to the circle for game two, while BU countered with Britney Detwiler.
BU wasted no time in seeking revenge from game one, as they got to Peyton in the first with a solo homer from Chiya Louie.
The Eagles took the lead away in the bottom of the second, when freshman Dani Weir launched a two-run shot off Detwiler to straightaway center, putting BC in front 2-1.
The game remained quiet until the fifth, as both pitchers settled into grooves. BU broke through for three scores in the fifth, however, on homeruns from Melissa Dubay and Brandi Shields.
Trailing 4-2, the Eagles went to work in the fifth. Obrest led off with a walk. With one out, sophomore Danielle Pandolfo also drew a walk. One out later, junior Amanda Booth ripped a clutch single up the middle to plate Obrest and pull the Eagles within a run.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Terriers came right back in the sixth with a solo homer from Rachel Hebert to extend their lead to 5-3.
That run would prove to be the difference maker, as BC got their fourth and final run in the sixth on senior Jenna Macchi's ninth homer of the year, a solo shot to left. After Macchi's bomb, the Eagles continued to threaten, with singles from Obrest and Weir to extend the inning. But Detwiler gutted through and got the outs she needed.
In the seventh, Payton walked and was sacrificed to second by Booth. Freshman Kat Vasquez singled, and the Eagles had the winning run on with only one out and the heart of the order. In gritty fashion, however, Detwiler got the Eagles two leading hitters, Macchi and senior Britney Thompson, to foul out and ground out, respectively, to end the game.
Boston College hosts their final home game of the season tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Providence Friars at Shea Field beginning at 4pm.
