Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles softball team defeated crosstown rival Boston University 3-1 in the first game of today's doubleheader at Shea Field. A dramatic sixth-inning homerun by senior Ashley Obrest broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Eagles the win.
Senior Britney Thompson spun a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six. It was the second consecutive dominant performance from an Eagles starter, after freshman Taylor Peyton threw a complete game in yesterday's 1-0 loss to UMass.
Thompson got two quick outs in the first before surrendering a long homerun to BU's Chiya Louie. A single and two walks later, and Thompson was in a legitimate jam. Fortunately, she got BU's Nora Militz to fly out to left for the third out.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the second with a rally that started on a sharp one-out double by sophomore Renee Ramos. After a walk by senior Ashley Obrest and a single by freshman Dani Weir, the Eagles were cooking with the bases loaded. BU starter Megan Currier bore down and got sophomore Danielle Pandolfo to ground into a fielder's choice, on which Ramos was gunned down at the plate. Currier then struck out freshman Taylor Peyton, and the Terriers took their 1-0 lead into the third inning.
Junior Amanda Booth led off the bottom of the third with a single up the middle. With senior Jenna Macchi at the plate, Booth caught BU snoozing and swiped second base. Macchi then singled through the left side, sending Booth to third. Macchi took second on the throw. Thompson was up next, and lifted a long sacrifice fly to left field to plate Booth and tie the score.
In the top of the fourth, BU led off with a walk and a bunt single. Obrest, the catcher, did a great job squashing the rally by picking off the BU runner at second base. Just as key was the unforgiving block of the bag by Macchi, who applied the tag. Thompson followed the pick-off with two powerful strikeouts, and the score remained 1-1.
Things remained quiet until the bottom of the sixth, when Thompson led off with a hard-hit single to center. After a perfect sacrifice bunt by Ramos, Obrest strode to the plate. Obrest crushed a Currier offering over the left-centerfield fence to put the Eagles ahead 3-1.
Thompson got a quick 1-2-3 in the seventh to close out the Terriers in game one of the doubleheader. In improving to 8-13, Thompson outdueled BU's best pitcher, Currier, who fell to 17-4 with the loss.
