Amherst, Mass. - The Eagles softball team lost an exceptional pitcher's duel 1-0 this afternoon at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Freshman Taylor Peyton threw a masterful complete game, allowing just one run on four hits. Unfortunately, UMass starter Britney Balschmitter was just a shade more dominant, throwing seven shutout innings and surrendering just three hits while striking out five.
The Eagles had very few chances against Balschmitter, as evidenced by their three base hits. Perhaps the Eagles best chance came in the second inning when senior Britney Thompson reached on an error by the UMass shortstop with nobody up. Thompson moved up to second on a wild pitch with one out, but could get no further, as Balschmitter struck out senior Ashley Obrest and freshman Dani Weir.
The Minutewomen nearly got to Peyton in the fourth, when they moved a runner to third with two outs. Peyton responded by striking out the next batter and getting out of the jam.
In the sixth, UMass got a two-out double from Stacey Cullington to keep the inning alive. Jackie Teman came in as a pinch-runner, and came around to score the game's only run on a single by Lauren Proctor.
The Eagles refused to go quietly in the seventh, as Obrest was hit by a pitch with two outs. Weir followed with a clutch single through the right side, but Balschmitter got freshman Blair Destito to ground out for the game's final out.
The Eagles return home to host cross-town rival Boston University in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3pm at Shea Field.
