Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles busted out of their 11-game ACC losing streak in a big way this afternoon, taking down the Virginia Tech Hokies 9-1 in the finale of this weekend's series in Blacksburg, VA.
The Eagles jumped the Hokies in the first, putting up a four-spot against Virginia Tech starter Heather Lowry. Lowry walked two batters and hit two more to bring in the first Eagles run. Seniors Britney Thompson and Jenna Macchi both came in two score in a throwing error by Virginia Tech's shortstop Anna Zitt. On the very next batter, Zitt made a fielding error that allowed sophomore Renee Ramos to register the Eagles fourth score of the opening stanza.
Boston College added their fifth run in the top of the third when freshman Dani Weir slammed a solo homerun to left-center.
Meanwhile, the Hokies were able to get little accomplished against the Eagles starter, Thompson. Thompson surrendered only three hits and two walks, as she threw five complete innings to improve to 7-13 on the year.
Thompson also started off the Eagles fourth-inning rally that netted four more runs and allowed the Eagles to close up shop early as they led the Hokies by eight runs after five innings. Thompson led off with a single and came around to score on a single by freshman Blair Destito. Destito and Ramos both scored on the Hokies third error of the day, and Weir scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Amy Tunstall.
Thompson retired the final seven batters she faced, as the Eagles improved to 11-25 on the year.
The Eagles will be in action again on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to Umass-Amherst for a single game beginning at 5pm.
