CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Eagles and Demon Deacons concluded their series at Shea Field this afternoon after two dramatic games on Friday and Saturday and BC continued its winning ways as they pounded out 18 hits for an 11-5 victory and series sweep of Wake Forest. The win is the Eagles' fifth in a row, and improves their overall record to 16-21-1 and 9-12 in ACC play. Wake Forest falls to 22-22 overall and 8-13 in conference action.
Wake would get on the board first in this one as they got to starter Dan Houston early in the top of the first as Houston would walk the first two batters he faced to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch, both Ben Terry and Brett Linnenkohl advance one base putting runners in scoring position.
Allan Dykstra singled through the middle, scoring Terry from third and Dustin Hood would follow with a single, scoring Linnenkohl from third. After a Weldon Woodall strike out, Andy Goff singled up the middle giving the Deacs a 3-0 advantage after one.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Joe Ayers doubled to right field and advanced to third the very next batter when Pete Frates singled to left field. Catcher Harry Darling would then drop a bunt down the first base line and be tagged out but Joe Ayers would score, and Pete Frates advanced to second.
The next batter, Ryan Hutchinson roped a single to center field, scoring Frates but Hutchinson was thrown out at second trying to advance on the play.
BC kept the hitting going in the bottom of the third as Mike Belfiore doubled to center to lead things off. After a Tony Sanchez pop out, Eric Campbell singled up the middle bringing up Mike Augustine who proceeded to single through the right side, tying the game at 3-3.
Jared McGuire followed with a rope to right center field, scoring Eric Campbell from third and giving BC their first lead, 4-3. Joe Ayers would then collect his second hit of the day - a single through the left side, scoring Mike Augustine. Pete Frates then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Jared McGuire, and giving the Eagles their fourth run of the inning.
The Eagles added thee more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Harry Darling would start things off with a single to center and score Joe Ayers from third. Peter Frates would steal third and Darling advanced on the throw, setting up Michael Belfiore to knock in two runs as he singled to center, giving BC a 9-3 cushion.
In the bottom of the seventh, Harry Darling collected his second hit of the day as he doubled to right center, scoring Joe Ayers from first. Darling would advance to third on a groundball by Ryan Hutchinson, and then score on a single by Mike Belfiore.
The Deacs would get to starter Dan Houston for one more run in the top of the sixth, and one off of BC reliever James MacDonald in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as the Eagles would hold on for the 11-5 win.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 25 when they take on Northeastern University in the Championship game of the Beanpot Tournament at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
