Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Georgia Tech starting pitcher Sarah Wood kept the Eagles softball team hitless for nearly the entire game as the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 6-3 win in the second game of today's doubleheader at Shea Field.
Wood was dominant in winning her fourth straight decision and improved to 8-1 on the year.
Georgia Tech scored in the top of the first inning when Aileen Morales came home on a sacrifice fly by Savannah Brown.
After allowing a walk to Eagles freshman Blair Destito with one out in the second, Wood mowed down an astounding 15 consecutive batters.
Meanwhile, the Tech bats exploded for four runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back homers by Kristina Hull and Brittany Barnes, extending their lead to 5-0.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on a sixth run in the top of the seventh on a homerun by Aileen Morales.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles had yet to get to Wood, and it appeared a no-hitter was imminent. That is until senior Britney Thompson stepped up to the plate and crushed a Wood offering over the right field fence for her team-leading ninth longball of the year. The very next batter, sophomore Renee Ramos, also homered, taking a Wood pitch out to left. This capped off a great day for Ramos, who also had two homers in the first game.
Amazingly, Blair Destito followed Ramos with a homerun of her own, pulling BC to within 6-3. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they would get no closer. Wood got freshman Taylor Peyton to ground out before getting freshman Amy Tunstall to fly out to end the game.
Peyton, the starting pitcher, falls to 2-8, while the Eagles fall to 9-20, and 2-11 in the ACC.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon at 1pm at Shea Field. Tomorrow also marks the Eagles Senior Day, where the school will honor the softball team's four departing seniors: Jenna Macchi, Britney Thompson, Ashley Obrest, and Amanda Brooks.
